Taiwanese artist Chen-Dao Lee has created a world of violence, vengeance and a lot of semi-naked women. Lee introduces the viewers to a mysterious and erotic body of work, with his pop images reflecting as dark objects of desire on the viewers’ mind. These anime-like, twisted paintings depict a world where men are perverse pigs and women are fighting Amazons.
Lee’s characters are furious and cynic individuals who strive to survive in a world where fighting seems to be the only way of communicating. Expressing their emotions through violent and excessive reactions, the heroes fully embrace every single feeling that passes through their body.
Throughout his career, John Kacere devoted his attention almost solely to idealized and highly sexualized depictions of the midsections of the female body, clothed in revealing lingerie. Originally an Abstract Expressionist, Kacere adopted a photorealist style from the 1960s onwards, although he rejected the term as a description of his work. His larger-than-life images of the female form—usually lying on their sides in a horizontal picture plane—have drawn criticism from feminists, prompting Kacere to reply: “Woman is the source of all life; the source of regeneration. My work praises that aspect of womanhood.”
Baldwinsville, NY based artist Lacey McKinney‘s haunting portraits depict women and distorted figures, rendered in energetic strokes and accented with bold patches of color.
McKinney demonstrates she is not afraid to continually reexamine her approach to the figure and investigate new ways in which it can be used to communicate ideas and manipulate aesthetic elements. The ideas she explores play with issues of identity and the complexities and ambiguities of “self. ” Her compositions give a nod to the multiple perspectives inherent to cubism.
Afarin Sajedi is an Iranian artist that creates soul baring close-ups that make you feel like your spirit has just been scolded. Afarin is not trying to be a feminist hero or a champion for the Third World. She is just trying to scope, capture and give a glimpse of the hidden and very often unseen turmoil buried within all of us.
The use of small brushstrokes make her paintings that much more lively – the texture encourages the idea of naturalism and un-edited beauty and the color is so vibrant and detailed, like you can see every pore, shadow, freckle, and blemish that exists. Virgil Finlay was an American pulp fantasy, science fiction and horror illustrator. He has been called “part of the pulp magazine history … one of the foremost contributors of original and imaginative art work for the most memorable science fiction and fantasy publications of our time.”
While he worked in a range of media, from gouacheto oils, Finlay specialized in, and became famous for, detailed pen-and-ink drawings accomplished with abundant stippling, cross-hatching, and scratchboard techniques. He produced wild and fantastic images of monsters, aliens, demons, robots, spacemen, spaceships, bizarre experiments, psychological horror, fantastic landscapes, and women.
Henn Kim is an illustrator from Seoul, Korea. Her minimal and surreal illustrations are heavily evocative; they suggest deep feelings and emotions through visual connections and unexpected juxtapositions. It’s a free flow of visions and sensations depicted through essential, black and white figures who act in a world of giant objects, metaphoric illustrations of emotions or windows opened on our subconscious.
Monochrome is Helena Vizcaíno, a visual artist and illustrator from Spain. She is currently living and working in Helsinki, Finland. She illustrates dark universes that don’t exist, elements from her imagination, natural and outer space elements. Her interests go from animation to the tattoo culture, to fashion design and advertising, where she also finds her inspiration.
Sofia Hydman has taken various courses in photography, illustration and graphic design and graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Visual Communication at Beckmans College of Design, Stockholm in 2014. Today she works with personal projects and freelance work.
Sofia is inspired by empty spaces and has difficulties with drawing straight lines. She works with a number of different techniques, ranging from digital images to graphic design to illustration and drawing. A recurring theme in Sofia’s work is to explore identity and heritage. By working in both digital and analogue mediums she makes pastel-colored tones which creates a narrative and dreamy dreamworld.
Jessica Stoller uses clay and the grotesque as a vehicle to explore the constructed world of idealized femininity, gathering imagery across cultural lines and histories. The clay is sculpted, draped, carved, woven, and piped to create a wide range of bewildering effects. Porcelain is her primary medium, a historically weighted material that is intrinsically linked to notions of desire, mystery, and consumption.
Berlin based Maren Karlson makes drawings of powerful Amazonian women interfacing in a world of recurrent tropes that range from dominatrix Mickey Mouse, hyper-geometric interiors, and half-burnt cigarettes. The character is mammoth, with undulating arms and an anthropomorphic braid; badass, aggressive and splendid. Her ladies hold their fists high, they’re vulgar and violent and unapologetically beautiful.
