Pretty damn awesome today that the SF Giants made sure that the greatest of them all, Willie Mays, got to be on hand to meet President Obama for the honorary “World Series Winner Meets the President” gig. Damn cool. The Giants did proper on that. And, of course, Brian Wilson kept it clean…. cleanish. Images via SF Chronicle.

Gene Davis

Posted from The Citrus Report

Born in Washington D.C. Gene Davis spent most of his life there and worked as a sportswriter and later as a White House Correspondent. He was a completely self taught artist who began painting when he was 29 and was inspired by visiting the Washington Workshop. Most known for his large scale vertical lines Davis says:

“…look at the painting in terms of individual colors. In other words, instead of simply glancing at the work, select a specific color such as yellow or a lime green, and take the time to see how it operates across the painting. Approached this way, something happens, I can’t explain it. But one must enter the painting through the door of a single color. And then, you can understand what my painting is all about.”

–Gene Davis in an interview with Donald Wall, in Donald Wall, ed., Gene Davis

Davis’s work can be seen in the Smithsonian American Art Museum, and the Guggenheim Museum

Did President Hu Jintao of China get impressed at last nights state dinner?

Posted from The Citrus Report

Seriously, you might as well invite Angelina Jolie, Buck Henry, and Selena Gomez, because we highly doubt that the President of China was impressed with leaders of Boeing, Microsoft, and the pseudo-Mayor of San Francisco (he was invited) when drinking his white wine at the State Dinner at the White House last night. We are better at celebrities at this point anyway. Hell, throw Kobe Bryant in there, he sells jerseys in Shanghai by the truckloads, that is more impressive than the CEO of Goldman Sachs. Sure, sure, those people are important when talking money, but Obama, baby, let’s give them are real star power.

Yao Ming and David Stern have taught us. You break into the the Chinese psyche through NBA jerseys… Obama, get that down.

Assessing the first half of Obama’s term in the White House

Posted from The Citrus Report

Coming in the Sunday Magazine in the New York Times, is a fantastic assessment of Barack Obama’s first half of his term in the White House. What we like about it is that it touches on the disillusionment a lot of his early supporters feel right now, what Obama has done well, and what he needs to do to gain confidence with those supporters again. We appreciate Obama’s words and evaluation of himself as well.

“Now, the one thing that I will say — which I anticipated and can be tough — is the fact that in a big, messy democracy like this, everything takes time. And we’re not a culture that’s built on patience,” Obama says.

Let’s see how the next 24 months play out…

The aftermath of Bob Woodward’s “Obama’s War” book

Posted from The Citrus Report

Bob Woodward, the esteemed Washington journalist of Watergate and “All the President’s Men” fame, was given the keys to the secret chambers of the Obama Administration while they labored on the war in Afghanistan. And then, Mr Woodward wrote a book, Obama’s War, that is causing quite a stir as it portrays the Obama team as, not ineffectual or poorly managed, but divided.

The Daily Beast has a good round-up of the book and the aftermath of what is going down in the White House now that the book is out for the world to read/see. A great point in the article reads, “So far, there are no heroes to this narrative, only self-described heroic skeptics of the war and warriors who would fight on forever.”

So. It. Goes.

At some point, you have to ask Americans, what do you want?

Posted from The Citrus Report

Some stats that just make us want to scream with exhaustive anger.

—One quarter of Americans still believe Mr. Obama was born outside the United States
—18 percent of Americans now believe he is Muslim, up from 12 percent when he ran for the presidency and 11 percent after he was inaugurated

Read this entire NY Times article on how the White House deals with the crap.

Obama gives British PM Cameron a Ruscha, Obama gets a former FIFTY24SF Exhibiting Artist, Eine

Posted by FIFTY24SF Gallery

Barack Obama, our president, now has a piece of art from a former graffiti artist turned fine artist turned presidential gift artist, Ben EINE. British Prime Minister, David Cameron, gave the piece to Obama on a visit this week to the White House, and Obama gave an Ed Ruscha lithograph in exchange.

Mr. Eine was in a group show at FIFTY24SF Gallery in January 2008, with Cum*, Ryan Jacob Smith, Mario Wagner, and Brent McHugh, in the “Letters to the Editor” show. A good move to see Eine going from FIFTY24 to the White House.

Obama believed to have relieved McChrystal from his post

Posted from The Citrus Report

General McChrystal got 20 minutes with President Obama, and then appears to have been relieved of his post as Commander of the war effort in Afghanistan. The Times has this headline on the site, “Gen. Stanley McChrystal Is Relieved of Command in Afghanistan, White House Official Says,” but no official story yet. And the BBC has a story with the word “Fired” in the headline, so we guess that means he was fired.
