‘CAVE PAINTINGS’ BY REBECCA CHAPERON

Check out the new work by Vancouver-based artist Rebecca Chaperon. Chaperon’s paintings act as a means of storytelling, as landscapes meet flat geometry and emotive undercurrents. Born in England in 1978, Rebecca attended Emily Carr University in Vancouver, BC where she studied fine arts until graduation in 2002. Her work is exhibited/collected internationally and recently shown (2014) in Vancouver,  LA and San Francisco.

Her process often begins with the idea of place. We see paintings of dark landscapes that seem to stretch infinitely, a doomed place invented by the artist as a theatrical stage where various protagonists bravely live out mysterious vignettes. The setting becomes a representation of the internal landscape of the artist, or more specifically the small brilliant garden of creativity that exists within. On the visual journey through Chaperon’s work we are immersed in surreal versions of the world, places that waver just outside of our perception.

Vancouver, Canada based Nicolas Sassoon has been working on massive GIFs that span the width of a browser and actually require scrolling. His latest work, Studio Visit, depicts a studio space complete with wall panels, a brick fireplace, and multiple LCD screens. Today Sassoon is one of the most interesting artists working in the field of GIF-making and new media. He shows all over the world and has been included in exhibitions at the New Museum, the Museum of the Moving Image, and the New Orleans biennial Prospect.

The body of work Sassoon has been producing there is called Pandora, which is the name of the street where the artist has lived, off and on, for the past four years. The series’ title also refers to small actions that have unforeseen and far-reaching consequences, and perhaps even to the darkness of the Internet. Sassoon’s pared-down aesthetic reflects that somber mood.

Priscilla Yu is a multi-disciplinary artist, illustrator, and designer based in Vancouver, Canada. She paints worlds that appear to dwell in a strange gravity. Her work employs geometric forms and skewed perspective, as a stylistic constraint, which is sprinkled with the intuitive balancing of color, form, and texture that she internalized as a child.

METAPHYSICAL LANGUAGE BY ERIC LOUIE

by Ariadna Zierold

eric louie, painting, metaphysical, colorful, abstract, geometric, shapes, vancouver, upper playground

Vancouver based Eric Louie was born in Boston, Massachusetts, USA. His latest paintings continue to develop his unique metaphysical language. He has always been interested in spatial dimensions that evoke realms of consciousness and memory. In his paintings he is pushing the spatial relationships by use of multiple planes and a new use of formal abstraction and geometric shapes. They speak of the natural order of things that both acknowledge and deny spatial illusion simultaneously.

He began taking art classes at the Winnipeg Art Gallery at the age of nine and received his B.F.A. from the Alberta College of Art + Design in 2002. A cool find. In the Oakland Museum of California collection is the 79-page, 1973 Sierra Designs catalog. As the museum notes of one of the great Bay Area outdoors brands, the catalog is “printed partially in full color and partially black and white. Many of the photographs in the catalog were taken as part of a 10-day hiking expedition up the West Coast Trail on Vancouver Island, British Columbia, which was organized by Sierra Designs. The first part of the catalog is a narrative of this expedition, with journal entries of two of the people on the expedition. Featured in the second half of the catalog are items, mostly illustrated by line drawings, which were manufactured by Sierra Designs, including sleeping bags, jackets, climbing equipment, camping accessories, footwear, tents, and backpacks.” (ocma)
