Tauba Auerbach’s “Float” @ Paula Cooper Gallery, NYC

Manhattan 20120507 00094 2 605x453 Tauba Auerbachs Float @ Paula Cooper Gallery, NYC Tauba Auerbach paula cooper gallery float

This is how Tauba Auerbach and Paula Cooper Gallery of NYC announced her newest exhibition that opened this past weekend. We like a good bit of pretension in the arts, especially with invites and announcements. We weren’t invited. But we still like the art.

In her acclaimed series of Fold paintings, first introduced in 2009, Auerbach presents powdery trompe l’oeil surfaces that register the traces of their former three-dimensionality. Painted with an industrial sprayer, the works draw attention to the physical properties of pigment imitating light. Alongside new Fold paintings, this exhibition will include a new series of Weave paintings, presented for the first time in the United States. As with folding, Auerbach uses weaving to reassess and thoroughly transform the flat picture plane. Elusive topographies emerge from the monochromatic works, bringing the viewer into a subtly shifting world of ruptures and continuities, reliefs and recesses.

In addition to the paintings, the exhibition will present new photographs and sculptural objects, including Onyx, a deconstructed material volume printed and bound in book form. As Auerbach once observed, “A book is an X-axis. The format is almost always linear; the content, bound in a prescribed order, marches single file.”* Inspired by a desire to upend this theory, Auerbach resorts to tomography (the method of producing images of the internal structure of an object), allowing the viewer to slice through a solid block of onyx layer by layer, revealing the twists and turns of a mineral narrative.

Why can’t it be branded the “Palestinian Oktoberfest”?

800 ap mahmoud abbas palestine 110925 605x339 Why cant it be branded the Palestinian Oktoberfest? palestinian oktoberfest palestine arab spring

Its amazing how much international news you get once you leave the borders of the United States. We know that Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas just came home from the UN after making a historic speech declaring Palestinian independence, and is announcing a “Palestinian Spring” on the horizon. Hey, we like it, we like the vibe, but how about a new branding: “Palestinian Oktoberfest.” It suggests fun, and its a new look on the Arab Spring that has been used as a overall name to the revolutions in the Middle East this year. Just a thought…

Citrus Peels used to Fuel

orange frog Citrus Peels used to Fuel orange peel orange frog citrus peel to fuel citrus peel to food

We always love a good Citrus Story. A chemist at the University of York in the United Kingdom has figured out a way to convert citrus peels into a variety of useful materials, from plastics to ethanol starting a new initiative called the Orange Peel Exploitation Company. We love it. And how cool is that orange frog pic we randomly found while image searching orange peels?

Apple passes Exxon Mobil as US’ most valuable company

apple rainbow logo Apple passes Exxon Mobil as US most valuable company valuable us company Texas microsoft irving exxon mobil Apple

How valuable is Steve Jobs? About a market capitalization of $338 billion. Apple today passed Exxon Mobil as the most valuable company in the United States shortly after 11AM PST. That seems like a significant moment in time; a technology company is more valuable than an oil company. That is also a big win for iPads, iPods, MacBooks, and whatever Apple product that continues to sell at an alarmingly high rate. Microsoft had the #1 spot for a minute in 1999, but that was at the absolute height of the Dot Com bubble. Exxon Mobil, which is based in Irving, Texas, took the top spot in 2005 and remained there until Tuesday.

This guy is going to fund the world’s tallest building

saudi prince 007 This guy is going to fund the worlds tallest building worlds tallest buidling saudi prince prince alwaleed bin talal billionaire

Saudi billionaire Prince Alwaleed bin Talal is funding the world’s tallest skyscraper. More importantly, you know what is fun about being a Saudi prince/billionaire? You get absolute protection from the United States and don’t have to return the favor (see funding for 9/11 attacks). According to the Guardian, “The £736m deal for the hotel, office and residential complex reaching two-thirds of a mile into the sky makes Saudi Arabia the current frontrunner in the race between the oil-rich nations for glitzy architectural trophies. The projects are seen as status symbols to show off both economic success and cultural sophistication.” My phallus is big! No, mine is way bigger!

Rolling Stone on How Conspiracy Theories Are Destroying America

a6a33c2fec8836fdac4f3fa85ba7b38a9d7964c6 Rolling Stone on How Conspiracy Theories Are Destroying America rolling stone Osama new mexico jfk fema conspiracy theory Barack Obama aliens 9 11

This is a nice piece for both liberals and conservatives to read, the concept about how conspiracy theories have destroyed common sense and dialogue in the United States. Take for instance, Barack Obama not being born in the USA. That was, instead of jobs, wars, and the economy, on the tip of conservatives wishlist for about 3 years now: where is the birth certificate, Obama is Muslim and born in a jungle in Indonesia.

As Rolling Stone notes in a recent post, “Canadian journalist Jonathan Kay, who has a new book out about conspiracism, has written Internet-fueled conspiracy theories have caused ‘nothing less than a rift in the fabric of consensual American reality’ – meaning, we don’t agree anymore on what reality is.”

Here are some conspiracy theories worth noting:

1) 9/11 was an “inside job”
2) Doctors concocted the AIDS virus
3) JFK was killed by the FBI, Mafia, Cuba, etc.
4) Moon landing was staged (we actually like that one)
5) Aliens landed in New Mexico
6) Osama is alive, or died years ago
7) FEMA has death camps at the ready (there ability to respond to a crisis is a death camp, not so much having a death camp)
