Dynamic geometric structures, angular shapes and striking color characterize Fox’s tightly packed scenes of mystical figures and their existential struggles. Drawing on personal introspection, Fox juggles narrative and pictorial composition to produce vivid mindscapes, layered journeys in search of an underlying energy and balance.

Agnew’s work deals with the construction and deconstruction of belief systems, be they political, religious, social or cultural. He is interested by the malleable nature of what we hold as ‘truth’, and how the presentation of information informs our subsequent understanding of events.

Chen’s practice is tied to a natural, oriental aesthetic, influenced by Western abstract art and oriental philosophy. Photography is a personal tool for Chen, used to question broad concepts that migrate from the personal to the philosophical realm. Her recent work focuses on the combination of photography and printmaking, a combination of techniques used to explore beneath the surface of things by simplifying and abstracting; an approach aimed at reviving spiritual awareness and intuition before entering the symbolic nature of what we view.

DISTORTED PORTRAITS BY CARL BEAZLEY

by Ariadna Zierold

UK artist Carl Beazley’s portraits are twisted and multiplied, clearly surreal, yet based on real faces with their pores and blemishes. Completely self-taught, the 26-year old artist credits his unique point of view to being able to find his own voice absent the outside influence of teachers or mentors.

“By not going to University and not studying the all different painting techniques from history, I feel it has given me the freedom of learning from trial and error. I am always trying to look for something new and original that’s never been done before, and although I love the paintings of the old masters, it is important to me to look to the future so that in a hundred years from now we have our own history, not just a regurgitated version of the generation that came before us. If we don’t try to take art to the next level by looking forward, we will just end up going in circles.” Carl Beazley

BOTANICAL SCULPTURES BY HITOMI HOSONO

by Ariadna Zierold

UK based Hitomi Hosono is a ceramic sculptor who studied pottery in Kanazawa, Japan and Copenhagen, Denmark. Ever since then she’s studied the botanical forms of leaves and flowers she found in her garden. She allows herself to be consumed by the legion of small, intricate details present in every leaf.

Often monochromatic, the works are focused on carved detail rather than color—repetition of form making each piece uniquely beautiful. The level of detail she’s able to wrestle from her porcelain sculptures is astounding. Every fragment of her botanical-inspired forms screams with intention, whether it’s in the finely-chiseled and painstakingly-researched anatomy of the plant or the mesmerizing colors of her glazes, which make the forms look equally organic whether they’re in cream and orange or black.

Jones distorts and tampers with her photographs to create unique mixed-media pieces that are both beautiful and disturbing at the same time.

“I love creating and capturing a beautiful moment, whether that be involving people or places, and then, in a way, destroying the innocence and aesthetic beauty of the image. Scratching away, or bleaching photographs is a way that I can relate to my images on a higher level; each scratch, tear or bleach mark symbolises how both society and the human mind have the power to destroy even the most beautiful of people or moments.” Rosanna Jones

THE FOLLOWERS BY ALAN FEARS

by Ariadna Zierold

alan fears, the followers, sculpture, painting, faces, people, characters, uk, upper playground

Alan Fears is a UK artist who makes paintings, sculptures, furniture and music. His style is simple and direct. The theme in most of his art revolves around reminding himself, and everybody else, how great and stupid humans can be and therefore how great and stupid life can be. People, the world and humor float around in his head and eventually end up in his work.

alan fears, the followers, sculpture, painting, faces, people, characters, uk, upper playground

Alan has depicted everyday faces and a variety of characters, like a blonde, bearded man with a unibrow and a cheesy guy wearing an I Heart Life hat. Despite these seemingly exaggerated characteristics, the artist feels the viewer will start to “search for themselves in the crowd”.

AUDIENCE INTERACTION HELPS CREATE THESE MILKY PORTRAITS BY BEN TRICKLEBANK

Filmmaker and photographer, Ben Tricklebank explores the humanistic need for control through its illusory existence in technology. Endec, his current exhibit at the Gazelli Art House in the United Kingdom, is comprised of two installations, one of which is a new series of photographic prints featuring a female figure partially submerged, yet fully coated in marbled, milky-white fluid.

The swirls of black dye ripple around her body and simultaneously controls, and is controlled by, the motion of a light reflecting pool where audience members can effect the speed and direction of the ripples. This symbiosis of struggle and accord between the figure and the liquid allows the creative process to shape the unexpected outcome of each ‘canvas.’ As one image on display states: control is an illusion and illusion is control.

The second installment of the two-part exhibition is also named, Endec, and will be a short film deriving inspiration from the installation and photographic series to follow. Alongside Tricklebank’s solo exhibition, concepts of control, surveillance and security will be examined in a group show featuring artists working with VR (virtual reality) technology in their practice. Displayed on the first floor, this show within a show will introduce the new medium for the first time within the gallery’s context, surveying ways in which the Summer 2016 release of Oculus Rift might influence trends, commercial and institutional engagement and artists working in this field. A full list of artists as well as contributing partners will announced shortly.
