Los Angeles based Masami Teraoka‘s early work consisted primarily of watercolor paintings and prints that mimicked the flat, bold qualities of ukiyo-e woodblock prints. These paintings, done after his arrival in the United States, often featured the collision of the two cultures. Series such as McDonald’s Hamburgers Invading Japan and 31 Flavors Invading Japan characterize themes in the work in this time period. These pieces blended reality with fantasy, humor with commentary, history with the present.

He has abandoned this style in favor of Western European religious iconography, in tune with his cultural and political critique of contemporary culture, particularly its confessional quality in America society. Teraoka’s work has been reviewed, collected and exhibited throughout the United States and abroad.

SPECTRAL FIGURES BY GENIEVE FIGGIS

by Ariadna Zierold

genieve figgis, painting, oil, humor, canonical, hierarchies, scenes, landscapes, bourgeois, traditional, portrait, upperplayground

The paintings of Irish artist Genieve Figgis are possessed of a wicked, unmistakably Irish sense of humor. They ironize our attitudes to conspicuous wealth, land ownership, and social hierarchies by reimagining canonical paintings—commissioned to preserve the glory of their subjects—as nightmarish scenes, suggestive almost of depravity.

Her scenes depicting bourgeois homes, traditional portraits, or landscapes are often haunted by spectral figures and leering creatures with canes and top hats. A sense of the charmingly macabre emerges from Figgis’ combination of an apparent pictorial banality with dreamlike qualities.

Akira Yamaguchi paints large and complex canvases using a technique which recalls ancient Japanese yamato-e paintings. This traditional style is updated and mixed with manga-like scenes and employed for mostly contemporary subjects.

The artist’s favorite themes are hyper-detailed cityscapes featuring buildings and infrastructures which are sometimes cross-sectioned in order to show what’s happening in the interiors. Traditional and contemporary buildings are filled with people dressed as in different epochs, cohabiting in a chaotic and stratified world.

Good Buy: Yuketen Wingtip Ghillie Moccasin

A new edit from what is a standard Yuketen model, we are loving the front of this Wingtip Ghillie Moccasin, now available at Inventory. “Taking reference from the traditional Scottish style of footwear, the Ghillie is unique thanks to the the tabs it uses for its crisscrossed lacing style rather than typical eyelets. In natural leather with a crepe sole the moccasin can be dressed as up or down as you like looking as good with shorts as it does a summer suit.”

The Last Meal

Posted from The Citrus Report

Because apparently it’s more humane if we let the condemned prisoner pick the meal of their chose before their execution. The bad news is this tradition dates back to the Ancient Greeks. The good news, only developing nations actually practice capitol punishment now, oh and the U.S. Yes, none of that was good news. The tradition of the last meal is strange and interesting and we thought we would give you a list of some of the requests. Happy Holidays.

John Wayne Gacy: A dozen deep-fried shrimp, a bucket of original recipe chicken from KFC, French fries, and a pound of strawberries.

Ted Bundy declined a special meal, so he was given the traditional steak (medium-rare), eggs (over-easy), hash browns, toast, milk, coffee, juice, butter, and jelly.

Timothy McVeigh: Two pints of mint chocolate-chip ice cream. Apparently PETA had been conversing with him and encouraging a vegetarian option.

Ruth Snyder: She was not served a last meal, eating the prison’s regular meal instead.

Odell Barnes: “Justice, Equality, World Peace.” It was denied.

Joan of Arc: Holy communion.

Clarence Ray Allen: Buffalo steak, Kentucky Fried Chicken, sugar-free pecan pie and sugar-free black walnut ice cream. He was a type 2 diabetic.

Saddam Hussein: Boiled Chicken and Rice

Adolf Eichmann: The German Nazi and “Architect of the Holocaust” declined a special meal, preferring a bottle of Carmel, a dry red Israeli wine. He drank about half of it.

“Refait”: A remake of the classic World Cup match of 1982 between France and Germany

Posted from The Citrus Report

This may be the best thing we have seen on the web today, and we are super surprised we found it on Wooster Collective, because we didn’t know that the Woosters liked a little football.

Here is the lowdown, and then watch:

“Refait” is a remake of the football WorldCup match between France and Germany (Seville, Spain, 1982). Shot by Pied La Biche in Villeurbanne (France), every aspect of the fifteen last minutes of the match was carefully reconstructed : players, positions, gestures, intensity, drama etc. It consists in shifting the traditional game area into the urban environment. Each sequence takes place in one or several locations and then the city temporarily becomes the lab for unsual experiments. The soundtrack is made up of the original commentaries mixed with interviews of the audience recorded during the shooting.”
