SENSORY OVERLOAD BY PAUL YORE

by Ariadna Zierold

Paul Yore’s work of tapestries and assemblages is full of excess, ejaculating penises and a riot of rainbow colors. It is a sensory overload of colors, images, words and sounds; a reflection of a consumer society that has achieved peak stuff.

The commercial, sexual and national mix with the religious forms, the altar piece and the temple with tapestries and mixed media art. His art is a mix of the infantile and juvenile with the pornographically adult, full of juvenile humour and childish joy.

Gunjan Aylawadi is a self taught visual artist and a qualified computer science engineer and industrial designer. Born in New Delhi, India, she now lives and works in Sydney. Through her unique and intricate, paper tapestry technique, she explores the intersection between craft traditions, sensory pleasures she experienced growing up and the new culture she finds herself in now.

Crafting thoughtful mosaics out of personal reflections, she creates works with simple materials and processes that are as important as the end result – illustrating the quiet power of slowing down and a thoughtful absorption of our environments.

Erin M. Riley is a Brooklyn-based artist whose work focuses on women and women’s issues primarily in hand-woven tapestries. Riley received her BFA in 2007 from Massachusetts College of Art and Design in Boston, MA and her MFA from Tyler School of Art, Philadelphia, PA, in 2009.

Erin has been weaving imagery culled from the Internet, and more recently photographs she has taken of herself using hand-dyed wool on a floor loom. Based on social media images as well as autobiographical experiences that focus on objects and fleeting moments, Riley’s work offers visual dialogue that aims to reevaluate and reconsider the values of contemporary women, their social spheres and stratification, as well as their attitudes towards sex and sexuality through keyhole-like glimpses into their lives.

She can finish a medium sized piece in 80-90 hours. When she is working on an upcoming exhibition, she spends about 12-14 hours a day weaving and can finish one piece in a week. Her most recent huge piece took her a month.
