Clet Abraham is a French painter and sculptor who has been changing signs in Florence, New York City and Osaka in Japan. He places specially designed stickers on his street canvases so as to make them amusing and provocative, but not distract from their original purpose

“The omnipresence of street signs, other than being a sign of the culture of “anti-responsibility”, can verge on the absurd. The message is very poor (sometimes I feel like I’m being treated like an idiot by them) and yet they have a highly invasive aesthetic. As a professional in the world of visual space, I feel called to intervene, both to notify the public of the absurdity of the situation, and to propose a constructive and respectful alternative….The final objective? That traffic keeps flowing without us feeling spoken down to!” Clet Abraham

But Zurich is so beautiful, Mr Sachs! Just a little 4″ x 4″ sticker, $2, from artist Tom Sachs. We kind of like it, good for stickering and getting people to think, “yes, that Switzerland place is fairly beautiful and neutral and likes other people’s gold and was founded by the Knight’s Templar,” nuke it.

Shepard Fairey’s Essay on Sticker Art with a nice mention of our August Artist, PEZ

From the OBEY website and published in Graphotism Magazine in 2003.

An excerpt:

The game with graff is balancing getting up like mad, with a flavorful delivery. It could be argued that even if hand made stickers have the flavor, it’s too time consuming to make enough of them to really crush it. Some dedicated individuals have proven this incorrect. Twist always had San Francisco and any other city he spent more than a couple days in, on handmade sticker lockdown, not to mention tags and pieces. Pez, a bike messenger, has crushed every city he’s lived in with tag stickers.
