It doesn’t matter what he shoots, or when, if it is film or photograph, the work of NYC-born, Johannesburg, South Africa-based Roger Ballen is some of the most remarkable contemporary art being made today. Are the characters real? Are they actors of a some play that only Ballen could direct? Is this a fantastical version of contemporary South Africa, or the truth? Are they staged works meant to be paintings? And as he has progressed, is Ballen trying to create photographs that are the closest thing to a sculptural painting that could ever be conceived? All we can confirm is that Ballen represents one of the most unique visions in art. With a new music video for Die Antwoord, who will be showing a one-night installation in our FIFTY24SF Gallery this Wednesday, February 22, we look at Ballen’s most striking works. —Raymond Brown / The Citrus Report staff

Plantation Weddings

Nottoway Plantation Antebellum Mansion 605x254 Plantation Weddings weddings the south slavery plantations

Why are people still having weddings at plantations slaves built?

Good question. There’s nothing more romantic than building your future together on the soil of racism and brutality!

For these soon-to-be spouses, reasoning like “reclaiming the property,” “plantations are pretty,” and “working around racism” makes a good enough argument.

Humpback Whales are the Rick Rubin’s of the Pacific Ocean

19obwhalesspan articleLarge Humpback Whales are the Rick Rubins of the Pacific Ocean south willard Songs singing NY Times humpback whales

Studies have shown that humpback whales not only sing underneath the ocean, they imitate the singing of other whales. As the NY Times reports, “some of their tunes turn into worldwide hits, with whales all over the Pacific Ocean picking them up.

Several genetically different groups of humpbacks, separate populations with little interchange among them, live in the South Pacific. Researchers recorded 11 different song types in the region from 1998 to 2008.

Their study, published online Thursday in Current Biology, found that each year, songs spread from one group to another, moving east from Australia to French Polynesia. They believe that this is the first observation of a cultural change transmitted repeatedly on such a large geographic scale.”

The Civil War started only 150 years ago today.

800px Battle of Gettysburg by Currier and Ives The Civil War started only 150 years ago today. south slavery lincoln civil war april 12 1861 american civil war

On April 12, 1861, the American Civil War began when Confederate forces attacked a U.S. military installation at Fort Sumter in South Carolina. When the Civil War ended in 1865, 620,000 Americans were dead. Keep this in mind: ONLY 150 YEARS AGO, Lincoln was president, the South wanted no part of the Union, and we had slavery in our nation’s borders. The fact we have gone this far in 150 years, is astounding, but the fact that we were so barbaric 150 years ago is mind-blowing as well.

elo vazquez

Where do you live?
In Seville, a very nice and sunny and full of orange trees city in the South of Spain.

What do you take pictures of?
Arms, cats, maps, plants, cars and backs.

What kind of camera do you use?
Lately, a small broken Canon Prima Mini Date that belonged to my boyfriend when he was a teenager.

What are your influences?
Suddenness, mainly.

Where do you see yourself in five years?
That’s what my father asked me yesterday and I got very sad because I couldn’t answer him and that’s what they’re going to ask me in the job interview I’m having this week, so I better think of something good to say. A possibility: teaching Spanish and translating movies in Reykjavík and/or Barcelona.

What makes you happy?
Really silly stuff like winning 2 x 1 cinema tickets and getting the exact amount of chocolate pieces in my cereals.
