SKATEBOARD SCULPTURES BY HAROSHI

by Ariadna Zierold

haroshi, sculpture, skateboard, recycled, wood, upper playground

Haroshi makes his art pieces recycling old used skateboards. His creations are born through styles such as wooden mosaic, dots, and pixels; where each element, either cut out in different shapes or kept in their original form, are connected in different styles, and shaven into the form of the final art piece.

Haroshi became infatuated with skateboarding in his early teens, and is still a passionate skater at present. He knows thoroughly all the parts of the skateboard deck, such as the shape, concave, truck, and wheels. He often feels attached to trucks with the shaft visible, goes around picking up and collecting broken skateboard parts, and feels reluctant to throw away crashed skateboards. It’s only natural that he began to make art pieces by using skateboards. To Haroshi, his art pieces are equal to his skateboards, and that means they are his life itself. They’re his communication tool with both himself, and the outside world.

Walrus Cruiser Pizza Party on July 31st at DLX Skateshop with Jeremy Fish

As Upper Playground celebrates its 15th anniversary, our radical neighbors DLX Skate Shop celebrates 20 years here in San Francisco. JAPANTHER paints with skateboards at Mana Contemporary

Japanther, an art performance/ band established by Matt Reilly and Ian Vanek, made its name with unique performance situations, appearing alongside synchronized swimmers, atop the Williamsburg Bridge, with giant puppets, marionettes and shadow puppets, in the back of a moving truck in Soho, and at shows with giant dinosaurs and BMXers flying off the walls. And now they paint with skateboards.  Matt Reilly adds paint to the wheels of his board and skates directly on to his canvas to create large, abstract paintings while putting on a live performance.  The process is definitely an important part of the experience both for the artist and its audience, and the end result becomes more than just abstract color bands on a canvas.  Take a look at their performance at Mana Contemporary and check out the resulting works from their recent show:

What are we selling? Well, not sure. But what we do know is that we are Blog #6,065 that has posted this video today and now knows what Front Magazine is.

Keith Hufnagel for Stussy Skateboarding

To that set that like to debate how “fresh” and how much they are going to “cop” of the new Huf season, we like to remember that above it all, Keith Hufnagel is one damn good skateboarder, and when he was in his complete heyday, he was one of the best around. Somehow we came across this Keith video of him skating for Stussy? Is that possible?
