New York based Calvin Seibert builds sand castles inspired by modern architecture. His sculptures are minimal in appearance, yet complex in form. They feature a mix of geometrical shapes and neat angular edges, that it’s hard to believe are made of sand and water. Using a paint bucket, homemade plastic trowels, and up to about 150 gallons of water he creates spectacular modernist sandcastles.
Toshihiko Hosaka‘s work defies what we typically think of as sand art as he sculpts and carves the loose, granular substance as if it were some malleable form of clay. He began making sand sculptures in art school and has been using beaches and sand boxes as his canvas for almost 20 years. There is no core, mold or adhesive ever used throughout the process: just sand. The only trick Hosaka uses is a hardening spray applied to his sculpture only after it’s been completed, in order to prevent wind and sun from eroding it for a few days.
Carl Jara (aka Grain Damaged) is an award-winning, professional sand sculptor from Cleveland, Ohio. Jara says he has known since high-school that he wanted to be an artist. After studying Illustration and Graphic Design at the Myers School of Art, Jara realized he did not want to become an illustrator or graphic designer and that his true passion was sculpting.
Simon Beck turns a walk on the beach into a work of art with these massive crop circle-inspired creations. Each piece takes a huge amount of pre-planning but physically executing such intricate designs can take a full day trudging (sometimes well into the night). He made some crazy ones on the snow in New Zealand and the Swiss Alps, too.
