Mount Maunganui, New Zealand based Ben Young is a self-taught artist who has been making glass sculpture for over 15 years. Each of Young’s sculptural works are hand drawn, hand cut and handcrafted from clear sheet float glass, then laminated layer upon layer to create the final form. He constructs models, draws templates, makes custom jigs and then cuts the layers with a glazier’s hand-tool.

Young’s current work explores the use of industrial materials to compliment the organic glass shapes. He liked the idea that concrete is a basic construction material, and also the physical and visual contrasts between the textures and colors of both materials. Still noticeably influenced by the ocean and bodies of water – the concrete forms have become an integral part of his art forms as have the small bronze carvings which he sculpts initially from wax and uses to help portray the narrative suggested by his landscapes.

New Zealand based Meredith Marsone is a contemporary artist working in oils. Her subject matter centres around the figure as they move through the myriad of human experiences. Marsone’s work is at once accessible and relatable but leaves the audience wondering the deeper context. She purposefully leaves this up to the mind of the viewer encouraging you to create your own narrative and meaning from the figures in their chaotic and emotive environs.

Since graduating in 2006 with a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Auckland University of Technology, Henrietta Harris has steadily built up a name for herself as a solid New Zealand artist.

She has skilfully hand-drawn hands, faces, brains, glaciers and more which have appeared in shows all over New Zealand, Australia, London and New York, on t-shirts, on record covers and in fine print publications.

Her paintings often involved portraiture with a departure into the surreal with faces skillfully obscured and misplaced by the clean sweep of a brushstroke. She primarily works with watercolor paint on paper.

Upper Playground is proud to release new designs by SANER

Famed Mexican illustrator and muralist SANER just released two beautiful designs exclusively for Upper Playground (See Saner’s UP collection here). We asked him a few questions about his illustrations and its inspirations:

Q1: Tell me about the titles of the 2 art works and why you named them that way.

The first (Kiwi Spirit)  is inspired by the trip we took to New Zealand earlier this year as I tried to find the relationship between the our two countries. Like creating a bridge that united these cultures and create a whole new culture inspired by icons representing each location.

The second (The Storm) is inspired by the battles we fight every day, to always know that we must be firm in our decisions and assume the consequences that these decisions bring into our lives.

Q2: Do you have an all time favorite tshirt?

Not yet, I have my favorite stages of life. For instance as a child I loved a San Francisco 49ers shirt and the Raiders logo has always captivated me. Now I enjoy making designs on shirts and imagine that some people have the same emotion I feel when I wear the shirt.

Q3: If you were a color which color would you be and why?

I think subconsciously the color red comes up because it has been one of the tones that has marked all my work and that is a fundamental part of my palette. It reminds me of the  passion and commitment that I must have every day.
