REMIXED COLLAGES BY JESSE DRAXLER

by Ariadna Zierold

The collage work of Jesse Draxler combines tendencies of immediacy, appropriation and a denial of visual ownership, though with hand-crafted technique. His mixed-media fusion of found images, typography and design sensibilities thrives in information-overload times, both in drawing inspiration as well as being viewed instantaneously. By finding source material from anything, Draxler is able to ‘remix’ fashion spreads as easily as referencing art movements, crafting a new 2-dimensional language that has an immediate accessibility.

FAIRYTALES BY ALEX KUNO

by Ariadna Zierold

alex kuno, fairytales, watercolor, surreal, graphite, chalk, mixed media, floral, nature, detailed, organic, upper playground

A selection of new fantastic work by artist Alex Kuno (previously featured here), using ink, watercolor, graphite and chalk. These new mixed-media pieces offer a decidedly frenzied, more toiled spin. These works take the familiar children and beasts and expose their innards, a blend of seemingly floral and unsettling organic matter. With Kuno’s playful vibrancy, each exposed being is more absorbing than repelling.

SENSORY OVERLOAD BY PAUL YORE

by Ariadna Zierold

paul yore, tapestries, assemblages, installation, excess, rainbow, colorful, overload, altar, mixed media, upper playground

Paul Yore’s work of tapestries and assemblages is full of excess, ejaculating penises and a riot of rainbow colors. It is a sensory overload of colors, images, words and sounds; a reflection of a consumer society that has achieved peak stuff.

The commercial, sexual and national mix with the religious forms, the altar piece and the temple with tapestries and mixed media art. His art is a mix of the infantile and juvenile with the pornographically adult, full of juvenile humour and childish joy.

“I love creating and capturing a beautiful moment, whether that be involving people or places, and then, in a way, destroying the innocence and aesthetic beauty of the image. Scratching away, or bleaching photographs is a way that I can relate to my images on a higher level; each scratch, tear or bleach mark symbolises how both society and the human mind have the power to destroy even the most beautiful of people or moments.” Rosanna Jones

SURROGATE FIGURES BY CALEB HAHNE

by Ariadna Zierold

Denver-based artist Caleb Hahne is a classic draftsman who’s not afraid to explore new digital media, while still embracing the same tools artists have been using for hundreds of years. Exploring the conversation between perceiver and perceived, Hahne’s work reflects on the fleeting moments of intimacy with oneself and others.

Hahne remixes convention by first appropriating images found on the internet. He then expands his technique by reducing information and creating a surrogate figure for the viewer to interact with. These ambiguous silhouettes function as empty vessels in which one can place himself or herself within to experience moments of intimacy or lack thereof. The absence of identity portrays an unfinished picture or blurred memory for the viewer to complete for themselves.

EXPERIMENTAL ABSTRACTION BY SIGMAR POLKE

by Ariadna Zierold

Sigmar Polke was a German painter and photographer who experimented with a wide range of styles, subject matters and materials. In the 1970s, he concentrated on photography, returning to paint in the 1980s, when he produced abstract works created by chance through chemical reactions between paint and other products.

Polke launched Capitalist Realism in response to Pop art, exhibiting the first works in this genre in Düsseldorf. Polke took as his motifs such ordinary food items as chocolate, sausages or biscuits, isolating them and apparently depriving them of their tactility in order to elevate them to the status of aesthetic signs.
