“My work serves as a bridge to research my history and culture while aiming to preserve. I look to the history of Latin American and the Amerindian people; I work with how these identities are lost through conquest, migration, and time, gained through family, culture, exploration, and passed down through tradition and genetic memory. I use these influences to contribute to a contemporary dialogue while simultaneously continuing the work of my ancestors. There has been so much loss and stigma of these communities that it is important to me that my work celebrates and honors them.” Natalia Arbelaez

Bruno Pontiroli lives and works in Paris. After studying in Supinfocom, he turned to drawing and painting to express his desire for artistic creation. Pontiroli creates surreal worlds inhabited by fantasy characters: centaurs, mermaids and other creatures which contradict all laws of nature. In his poetic and mysterious painting we can see the unlikely become a reality. The artist brings to life all our childhood dreams and gives us a new way to see the world.

MELTED FACES BY BRIAN DONNELLY

Toronto based artist Brian Donnelly (previously featured here) uses turpentine and hand sanitizer to melt the faces of his portraits into rainbow rivers. Inspired by an interest in human identity and vulnerability, Donnelly paints from real life, portraying features of his subjects with realistic precision. These portraits show all kinds of distortions, unsettling mutilations that deny any trace of socially accepted beauty or fragmented facial features that reveal human limitations and speak of vulnerability.

EXPLORATION OF THE PSYCHES BY IVAN ALIFAN

by Ariadna Zierold

ivan alifan, painting, portraiture, melted, ice cream, figurative, upper playground

Breaking down barriers of the different modes in which the body can exist in social spheres and contemporary art, Ivan Alifan explores the modern gaze of ambiguous figurative paintings that are revealed and transformed within the act of the individuals’ views. These portraits are not an attempt to render physical characteristics  but rather create a language of underlying sexual subtexts. Using ambiguity as a tool demands the viewer’s exploration of their psyches and provokes self awareness.

DIGITAL SCENERIES BY KEI IMAZU

by Ariadna Zierold

kei imazu, collage, digital, oil, painting, melted, collapsed, upper playground

Tokyo-based Kei Imazu’s paintings are heightened by the flurry of soft hues the artist has used. After making a collage, she transforms it from hew own point of view. Some sceneries are like melted while the others are like collapsed. But there’s a smoothness and elegance to her smears that take it beyond the glitchy.

Kei draws on classical imagery by painting a scenery created after digitally reassembling images collected from the internet, magazines or her own living space. She enjoys the colors and shapes of the motifs. She shifts our view to see all objects’ aesthetics and the entire composition.
