The Low Bros is an artist duo, which is made up of brothers Christoph and Florin Schmidt – formerly active as graffiti writers Qbrk and Nerd. Their work most often centers around stylized animal characters with human features, and addresses graffiti, hip hop, skateboarding and other elements which influenced and shaped the artists’ youth in the 1980s and 1990s.
The use of contemporary methods gives thematic glimpses into the future. The protagonists of their work embody codes and attitudes of city life, which are in contrast to the natural purity of the animal and nature motifs, also integral to their work. This tension drawn from the ambivalence between urbanity and nature gives rise to a whole Low Bros universe.
This year’s Project M/4 presented by Urban Nation and curated by Thinkspace Gallery brings together the works of more than 60 urban contemporary artists to Berlin. The project centers around a prominent residential building in Berlin that is in need of rehabilitation and mostly unoccupied. Titled Project M/4, the temporary art project was curated by Thinkspace Gallery by invitation of Urban Nation. The Project M/ series organized each year by Urban Nation and a guest curator has the ambition to improve the neighborhood by supporting internationally acclaimed artists to come together to create and connect with one another. This year’s participating artists include Nosego from the US, Puerto Rican Alexis Diaz (aka La Pandilla), C215 from France, the Australians Dabs Myla, and the Berlin-based Low Bros
The installation of M/4 took place on May 17th along with its first ever pop-up exhibition, ‘LAX/TXL’. LAX/TXL also curated by Thinkspace will feature works of more than 60 urban contemporary artists and will be shown until the summer just across the street from the Project M/4 building at the Urban Nation production offices in Berlin’s Schoeneberg district.
Low Bros consists of two brothers, Qbrk and Nerd, currently working from Berlin. With a background in graffiti Low Bros co-founded “The Weird” crew with Nychos, Cone, Hr. v. Bias, Dxtr, Rookie, Look and Vidam from Peachbeach and Frau Isa. The brothers have always painted together, but it took while before they began to create their characters together and develop their own common, geometric style that has now become Low Bros.
