NEW WORK BY KOHSHIN FINLEY

by Ariadna Zierold

Kohshin Finley’s latest works depict people of color as they attempt to answer the question, “how do I survive in America?” This series is the visual manifestation of a poem Finley wrote called Camouflage for the Modern Man. Camouflage tells the story of a young man who, in the wake of numerous police shootings, casts away his Air Jordans, hoodies, and other markers of vilified black masculinity, in hopes of putting his mind at ease. When his search for peace of mind proves futile, he begins to paint his body titanium white as his last recourse.

Born and raised in the racial and social climate of South Central Los Angeles, Finley taps into his own Black-Mexican heritage and experiences to create each painting. Finley’s friends and family are the subjects of these paintings, captured in vulnerable moments, at their most honest and revealing while having conversations with Finley about navigating the world as people of color.

TIME BASED GLITCHES BY MARC HOROWITZ

by Ariadna Zierold

marc horowitz, painting, paintings, glitches, humor, cartoonish, colorful, bright, new media, upper playground, los angeles, san francisco, ever gold projects

Los Angeles, California based Marc Horowitz works in painting, performance, video, photography, and social practice. In a practice that combines traditional drawing, commercial photography, and new media, Horowitz turns American culture on its head to explore the idiosyncrasies of entertainment, class, commerce, failure, success, and personal meaning.

Horowitz is presenting a new series of paintings and sculptures that explore the idea of time-based glitches and how a glitch can occur in lived experience. A glitch can be mundane—like the malfunction of a screen or speaker—but the time-based glitches Horowitz refers to are disorienting, creating rifts in time, space, and perspective. The works are designed to demonstrate the way in which a glitch—typically considered a mistake—might produce new spaces and new feelings with unexpected value.

The paintings begin with underpaintings replicating prints by New York-based mass printmakers Currier & Ives, active in the 19th and early 20th centuries. These underpaintings—which reference the very early conception of the American dream, the idea of manifest destiny, and the beginnings of American exceptionalism—are then overlaid with disparate forms and areas of color. The sculptures exhibit a similar approach, with the artist taking the traditional sculptural portrait format of the bust as a point of departure and creating an unexpected composite through the addition of new forms and materials.

BOLD LANDSCAPES BY DEEDEE CHERIEL

Los Angeles based Nalini ‘Deedee’ Cheriel (previously featured here) is a visual artist who started out creating record covers and T-shirts for the Oregon music scene in the early ‘90s.  Born in the hippie town of Eugene, Oregon, she began her own band and record label at the age of 19.  Influenced by the popular DIY culture of that time, she played in several all-girl bands (Juned, Adickdid, The Teenangels, The Hindi Guns) and co-created the semi-autobiographical film Down and Out with the Dolls. This artist has lived and studied abroad: Honduras, Chile, England, Portugal, Spain and her native India.

Cheriel’s work explores narratives that recognize the urgency and conflict in our continuing attempts to connect to the world.  With influences derived from such opposites as East Indian temple imagery, punk rock, and her Pacific Northwest natural environment, her images are indications of how we try to connect ourselves to others and how these satirical and heroic efforts are episodes of compassion and discomfort. Bold elements drawn from landscapes -both urban and natural- and pop culture suggest the ability to find commonalities and relationships between ourselves and our surroundings that inevitably confirm our greater humanity and quest towards love.

Los Angeles based artist Sally Deng grew up in a dual existence between living for months in China and traveling back to Los Angeles where her family owned a diner in downtown Los Angeles. This presence of opposites coming together is a recurring theme in Deng’s work, thoughtful environments in which she is able to harmonize between polarized elements.

Realizing that just about anything can be an art tool, she mixes various media including digital into dynamic collages. In early 2016 she completed her BFA from Art Center College of Design in Pasadena.

Los Angeles based artist (previously featured here) Alex Gardner’s faceless, matte black bodies are draped with cotton and positioned in scenes of wordless action displaying every day – if slightly surreal – occurrences, allowing us to place ourselves into the work.  With this in mind Gardner’s paintings take on our very own storylines, reflecting our innermost issues and creating a mental connection rarely experienced in painting.

The paintings take on innocent themes as well as more mature ones, standing somewhere in between the traditionally playful LSD-inspired smiley faces and something more substantial, always hinting at an exploration of a larger concept.
