In opposition to the minimalist artistic tradition and influenced by the ubiquity of urban graffiti, the artist’s works often appear scratched, defaced, camouflaged, dirty, or splattered.

The practice of Los Angeles based artist Jim Shaw spans a wide range of both artistic media and visual imagery. Providing a blend of the personal, the commonplace and the uncanny, Shaw’s works frequently place in dialogue images of friends, family members, world events, pop culture and alternate realities. Often unfolding in long-term, narrative cycles, the works contains systems of cross-references and repetitions, which rework similar symbols and motifs, allowing a story-like thread to be perceived.

INTERPRETATION OF SPACE BY KATIE GRINNAN

by Ariadna Zierold

katie grinnan, sculpture, installation, los angeles, kinesthetic, structure, form, upper playground

Los Angeles based Katie Grinnan uses sculpture, photography, sound, and video to explore the relationship between our visual and kinesthetic experience and our resulting interpretation of space.

Grinnan’s most recent work reflects the search for structure and form within complex systems such as the brain and the universe that resist resolution and are largely speculative. It is the alchemical, yet paradoxical relationship between actual experience and our interpretations that has become the underlying focus of her work.

FLUID IMAGES BY ALEX GARDNER

Los Angeles based artist Alex K. Gardner‘s works are a constant exploration of human nature, which the artist links to water symbols and fluid images, in an unusual cube patterned surreal landscape. Driven or confronted with a force greater than their own, his minimal, often faceless, characters express desire, anxiety, sadness, or the hardship to achieve what they long for.

PARALLEL DIMENSIONS BY ZACH HARRIS

by Ariadna Zierold

Zach Harris was born in 1976 in Santa Rosa, California. He received his Bachelor of Arts degree from Bard College in 1999 and his Master of Fine Arts degree from Hunter College in 2006. Harris’s painting conjures visions, in the sense that he imagines the inner tremors that remain unseen in the ordinary world, the vibrancy that animates our idea of something beyond us, whether an afterlife, a heightened state of consciousness or parallel dimensions.

His works, made from wood and often distinguished by carving on their surfaces, read somewhere between folk objects and aged devotional panels or even icons. They feel ancient, like riddles from another time whose keys have been slowly lost over generations.

GORGEOUS PORTRAITS BY TAE LEE

by Ariadna Zierold

tae lee, painting, portrait, portraiture, los angeles, women, magical, surreal, emotional, mystical, upper playground

Korean artist Tae Lee lives and works in Los Angeles. The focus of his work invites to ruminate on a certain state of being that is regarded as the ideal found at the peak of the human condition. He believes this ideal is found in the visage of empathy found in the expressions of Jesus, Mary, and the high Saints in the paintings of the 19th century Italian Renaissance. The faces imply a sense of understanding in the difficulties that humanity battles in it’s longing for enlightenment/salvation, but does not condescend humanity with sympathy or pity.

“The hypocritical and cyclical tendencies of the material world can only be soothed by the light of empathy, an effort mystics and shamans from times past have all championed. The illuminated visages of the Holy Mary and the Great Buddha radiate a similar empathy, their peace not denying the great cost of sustaining life. This grace, used to navigate through this tumultuous and ultimately comedic lifetime, is the realm in which I seek to explore my art.” Tae Lee

CRISPLY RENDERED PAINTINGS BY GREG ITO

by Ariadna Zierold

greg ito, los angeles, painting, illustration, bold, colorful, narrative, upper playground

Los Angeles-based artist Greg Ito’s paintings are crisply rendered, each with several symbolic images: a pair of hands; a burning candle; an hourglass; a distant view of a tropical isle; and a burning pleasure boat, airplane or house. His work suggests an open-ended narrative, part fantasy and part nightmare, existing somewhere in the twilight zone. Plucked from a widely distributed and universally ‘agreed’ upon language, the messy chaos of intimacy is compressed into a coherent and singular narrative.

Los Angeles based artist Lola Rose Thompson was born in Studio City, California. She studied sculpture at the School of The Art Institute of Chicago and received her BFA from Otis College of Fine Arts. Thompson is interested in the idea that objects can receive and transmit information that they may or may not contain; and moreover, that these objects have vast stores of data and figures, that may be difficult to see.

“Lately I’ve been thinking about groups of people – clubs, fraternities, gatherings, secret societies – I like to image that through these paintings I can delve inside territory that is exclusive and make it inclusive – by allowing the viewer to identify with the subjects of the painting. The painting is the invitation to the party.” Lola Rose Thompson
