Gaurab Thakali is a freelance illustrator and printmaker based in London, graduated from Camberwell College of Arts. His work captures the vibrance of the New York bebop scene. He has drawn film stills, beach parties, and languid pool scenes, as well as bustling cities and disease-ridden suburbs.
When you think of good design and music, I generally think Jazz. And Jazz album covers, photographs, and posters. Last year for the Guimarães Jazz in Portugal, Atelier Martino&Jaña teamed up with illustrator Alexsandra Niepsui to create these fantastic Jazz posters that we most definitely want up in our house. Let’s go with why we really began to get into the Beastie Boys… the jazz, experimental, jammed out, stony instrumentals, and “Sabrosa” from Ill Communication, with MCA’s funked up stand-up bass, and here played live so well, is just perfect.
The Mattson 2 play very pleasing, surfy jazz tunes. When we discovered they had released a new album Feeling Hands, we were very excited to have some fresh music from these talented twin brothers. When we heard they were doing a West Coast tour, we got even more excited. The Mattson twins were quite good when we saw them live at the UCSD Prebys Music Center, so we encourage you catch what ever show you can that’s left on this tour.
Radiohead has a few covers of interest, but one of our all-time favorites is this cover of 2000′s “Everything In Its Right Place” by the Brad Mehldau Trio. Somewhere, Thom Yorke is smiling very wide from this Jazz redo.
We couldn’t figure out the proper way to start out the week, so we went to the Blue Note Revisited tracks, and found this fusion/funksoul/disco/jazz Bobbi Humphrey “Young Warrior” track remixed by Madlib. Enjoy.
