Fifty years ago today, June 11, 3 men escaped from San Francisco infamous Alcatraz Prison. Frank Morris, John Anglin, and Clarence Anglin conceived and successfully (in so much they actually got off the island in some way) one of the most amazing escapes in the history of putting humans in the worst of conditions, behind the bars, and told to get normal again. And the Clint Eastwood starring movie was epic… just saying.

Here is a classic UP graphic by Morning Breath from the archives… a famed Alcatraz inmate.

Opening on May 12 at Prism in Los Angeles will be a solo show by San Francisco’s very own Barry McGee, and because it is a Barry McGee show, there will be a lot of attention thrown at this one. Even though we love a good McGee exhibition, the big retrospective in Berkeley is what we are really looking forward to this summer.

Tonight, Thursday March 8, through Saturday night, March 10, from 6—10PM, we will be having both a gallery and pop-up book shop in the Mission Night Market on 18th and Mission. Our good friends at Ken Ken Ramen set it up, and it is inspired by the night markets you would see in Asia, and they have taken an old noodle factory next to Ken Ken and converted it into a pretty special space. Come by some art from Andrew Luck, who is our featured artist, and buy some books from Papa Raymond.

First Friday: Clinic “Harmony”

The first time we ever heard this song was on a night drive with Nate Kenneth Moore down Highway 1, after a buying spree in San Francisco and heading back to Santa Cruz. You would think we liked it given we remember the first time we heard “Harmony” by Clinic.
