For a photography major at the Maryland Institute College of Art, Samantha Schubert has a very nice command of concept. Her series, “Learning to Love the State I Am In,” has the word love in it, has some very well conceived angles, and we like a good photographer to stand out amongst the Flickr set. (via)

Swampy in Brooklyn

IMG 2861 Swampy in Brooklyn swampy Brooklyn

Just a little something we passed by near the Williamsburg Bridge this weekend. We don’t mind seeing a Swampy piece on the East Coast, and even though we had seen this one a few times it seems on Flickr or around the Internet, this is just a nice clean, untouched piece on a side-street in the middle of Williamsburg. With the NYC Marathon going off a few blocks away, we got pushed down by the water, and caught it…

FIFTY24SF Gallery presents “Lush Sells His Soul in San Francisco” a solo exhibition and installation by Melbourne, Australia’s LUSH opening August 5th at 7pm.

LUSH is a graffiti writer who likes porn, kittens, and making people angry. His work features male and female genitalia juxtaposed with comedic messages and comic book illustrative style. He sometimes makes people, especially other members of the graffiti community, upset with his pornography graffiti, tongue-in-cheek videos, and unfiltered twitter and interview statements. When he is at his most theatrical, LUSH makes artwork inspired by other graffiti writers, created in an absurdist style demanding a call and response. Some see the work as equally offensive, equally humorous. His recent photo shoots require naked female models/strippers/porn stars to interact with his graffiti. In a recent conversation, LUSH has called Larry David an idol. Is he serious? Who the fuck does this guy LUSH think he is?

Known as both a controversial talent and grand shit talker, LUSH comes to FIFTY24SF Gallery as a much-talked about artist who has invigorated the Flickr and Twitter community over the past 24 months with the spread of his graffiti. For his first solo show in San Francisco, LUSH explores the idea that gallery shows should be events more than a place to see art. Example: If you like women naked in front of your graffiti, bring the nudity to the gallery. LUSH and team have created a real-life installation peep show, featuring models from San Francisco’s iconic nude revue, the Lusty Lady. The exhibition will also feature a new series of works on canvas. Mostly, LUSH plans on keeping up on some contemporary shit-talk.

LUSH asks that you remember to bring your $1 bills to the show and 50 hand made t-shirt from LUSH will be given out during the show.

We don’t know who this is, or where it came from, what gallery/artist, but we just know that we like it a lot. We found it on Flickr a while back when we were looking at images from the Hong Kong Art Fair, and we thank this Flickr member for the memories.

Dan Zev’s trip to Isreal and Palestine

This past Spring I took a month to travel all over Israel and Palestine. The Arab Spring, sweeping through the Middle East, is a cause for apprehension among Israelis and optimism for the Palestinians. There is a palpable tension that exists just below the surface of daily life, and it can quickly break out into violence.

During my time in-country there was a bombing in Jerusalem, countless rocket and mortar attacks committed against Israel by Hammas forces based in the Gaza Strip, devastating retaliatory strikes by the IDF, and the murders of two high-profile, pro-palestinians peace activists; Juliano Mer-Khamis and Vittorio Arrigoni.

At the same time, I experienced nothing but goodwill from everyone whom I met, both Israelis and Palestinians, and had a great time taking buses and shared-taxis from city to city. The entire month, I made it a point to not stay anywhere for more than three nights in a row so that I would always be seeing something different and meeting new people. In a country that’s smaller than New Jersey, I covered a lot of ground traveling at that pace.

I always had a camera on me and was taking pictures constantly. I’m still editing everything I shot but I’ve been posting one picture each day to my Flickr account: www.flickr.com/photos/high-karate/

Vadim Marmer, Another Damn Russian

Where do you live? Currently in Vancouver, British Columbia. Before that I lived in Connecticut for several years. That’s where I started taking pictures. Originally, I’m from Russia.

What do you take pictures of? Street. Except for staged photographs, pretty much everything else goes. I’m no different from many other people who like finding beautiful, funny and surreal in the everyday life.

What kind of camera do you use? I like small rangefinder cameras. Most of my pictures were taken with Bessa L with 25/4 Snapshot-Skopar and Bessa R3A with 40/1.4 S.C Nokton. I also used Holga for a little bit but then stopped because of its very unique image. There is just too much of Holga in images that come out of it. I few weeks ago, I purchased Fuji X100. So far, I have been enjoying it. I like the neutrality and realistic look of digital. It’s very “democratic”.

Are you formally trained in photography? No, I don’t have any formal training in photography. It’s a hobby.

What are your influences? Robert Frank, Garry Winogrand, and Michael Ormerod are my three favourite photographers. More recently, I started to enjoy William Eggleston and Stephen Shore. Actually, I buy a lot of different photography books, from classic Atget and Man Ray to contemporary Russian photographers Igor Mukhin and Sergei Maximishin. On Flickr, I very much like the work of Don Hudson www.flickr.com/photos/seefood_vol1/ and Brad McMurray www.flickr.com/photos/bemac/

One of the reasons I take pictures is because it helps me to understand better and appreciate the photographers I like. It’s another way to experience their work.

Where do you see yourself in five years? To tell the truth, I took a break from photography during the last two years. I felt tired of it and uninspired. Only recently I started taking pictures again (with digital). In five years, hopefully, I’ll still be taking pictures and enjoying photography.

What makes you happy? Many different things. When a picture turns out well is one of them.

Photographs by Darell Tallent

I live in Kent, England, put should be moving to London soon

I taking pictures of every day occurrences that catch my eye, whether its skating, the architecture that I skate, bands, the action of graffiti and drug taking, the last two are my favorites though

My cameras are pretty standard, ranging from Pentax espio 115g to a Pentax me super and a Olympus mju, have used a Rollei 35b occasionally, and I’m in the process of purchasing a Contax t2

I’ve pretty much self taught myself photography, I don’t see the point in paying to get taught it from a person that has probably self taught themselves.

My influences grow the more I get deeply into it, I like the work from Ari Marcopoulos, Larry Clark and Pax Paloscia, but my main influence is knowing there is a hell of allot out there that needs to be snapped up.

In five years I would like to see myself at a standard where I could have my work in galleries and maybe in books, and earning dollar for it.

I get pretty happy when i see a shot I had taken an think yeah that looks sick or when other people complement them, all that an Mary Jayne, she boosts my confidence in taking photos.
