This Saturday, FIFTY24SF Gallery will unveil a new installation and exhibition by Morelia, Mexico based artist, Rico Deniro. The artist exhibited in January 2011 at FIFTY24SF with an entire gallery full of wooden masks, created under Deniro’s art direction in Oaxaca by master wood craftsmen. For that show, Rico presented the craftsmen, that live outside of technologically based civilizations in the rural villages of Mexico, with images of first-world pop culture icons and employed them with one task: to interpret those icons in a traditional Mexican wooden mask.

For his newest exhibition, Escoliosis, Deniro expands upon the past body of work of wood masks, but now has gone on to include more elaborate wood sculptures of pop-culture icons. Deniro will also include more site-specific paintings and gallery mural to accompany the show’s wood sculptures.

FIFTY24SF Gallery will open the show on Saturday, May 26, 2012, but no specific opening event will occur.

“I am someone who likes to pretend that I don’t care what other people think of me. I like to pretend that I make my art for ME, and no one else. But there comes a point in every artist’s life that they crave recognition. Admit it. Be not ashamed. This is only human.” And in that, we sort of like Lissy Elle.

Grimes “Oblivion”: Go to the game, make your video

We are super confused by Canadian electro, darkwave musican, Grimes. At first we thought she was 14 (she is 24). We thought she was a punk band (see her new album cover). And with this video of her dancing around various Canadian sporting events with headphones on and dancing along to her track “Oblivion,” we officially like her. Sort of makes MIA look boring.

Mr. David Choe and Sean Parker discuss art at Facebook, 2005

Funny thing is, Harry Kim caught the most perfect moment that he could ever catch in this conversation between David Choe and Sean Parker at Facebook, circa 2005, before word of the Choe, Facebook IPO news broke. A nice historical perspective, and a seemingly normal, mundane discussion becomes something worthy of intrigue.

David Choe on the cover of NYTimes

scan David Choe on the cover of NYTimes stock New York Times ipo Facebook David Choe

We don’t like to report on the finances of our friends, so we will let David explain about why he, David Choe, was on the cover of the New York Times today, just below the Egypt soccer riots, and why he and Facebook will continue to be tied together in some sort of way.

Fuck, have you had the dream where you ARE this guy?!? And then some kind of happy accident happens , and as you’re in the middle of this glorious car crash , you stop to realize , that there is actually no such thing as an accident, and no chance encounters, and that everything has a direct purpose ? am I the only one that has this dream ? You never had that dream? It’s actually very very similar to another dream I have where I wake up at noon to my phone ringing, and the ringtone is butterfly wings, I pick it up and it’s Howard stern, the view, Ellen, Charlie rose, telemundo and every news outlet in the world and they are all begging to have morning breath phone sex with me. I rub one out quick to a cacophony of moans and then I get up and see my picture on the cover of the new york times and I find out that I’m the most highest paid decorator alive……..To be continued ☺ LOL”
