This Saturday, FIFTY24SF Gallery will unveil a new installation and exhibition by Morelia, Mexico based artist, Rico Deniro. The artist exhibited in January 2011 at FIFTY24SF with an entire gallery full of wooden masks, created under Deniro’s art direction in Oaxaca by master wood craftsmen. For that show, Rico presented the craftsmen, that live outside of technologically based civilizations in the rural villages of Mexico, with images of first-world pop culture icons and employed them with one task: to interpret those icons in a traditional Mexican wooden mask.

For his newest exhibition, Escoliosis, Deniro expands upon the past body of work of wood masks, but now has gone on to include more elaborate wood sculptures of pop-culture icons. Deniro will also include more site-specific paintings and gallery mural to accompany the show’s wood sculptures.

FIFTY24SF Gallery will open the show on Saturday, May 26, 2012, but no specific opening event will occur.

“I am someone who likes to pretend that I don’t care what other people think of me. I like to pretend that I make my art for ME, and no one else. But there comes a point in every artist’s life that they crave recognition. Admit it. Be not ashamed. This is only human.” And in that, we sort of like Lissy Elle.

Bologna’s Ericailcane and Rome’s HitneS are showing works at our sister gallery, FIFTY24MX, starting on March 17, 2012. We are used to seeing Mr. Ilcane’s work being a bit more metaphorical, so the literal gun to the head of an apparent children’s storybook character is a welcome sign. If you like that sort of thing.

A few weeks ago, we dropped in on Alex Pardee and his team as they were painting the offices of Urban Air in SOMA/San Francisco. We snapped a few photos, caught up with the man, and tried not to get black paint on our shoes. Thank you to Urban Air for letting us sit on their couch and vent. —Raymond Brown/The Citrus Report

Jeremy Fish iPad 2 Giveaway

SidebySide 605x379 Jeremy Fish iPad 2 Giveaway jeremy fish iPad 2 giveaway

Jeremy Fish and Upper Playground have teamed up to create a new app to bring Fish’s groundbreaking “Listen and Learn” exhibition to your iPad and iPhone. In conjunction with the app’s launch, Jeremy Fish has illustrated (and we mean hand drew, with his actual hands) the back of a brand new iPad 2 being given away on Upper Playgrond’s Facebook page.

This past summer at Joshua Liner Gallery in NYC, Jeremy Fish created an interactive exhibition featuring 30 paintings based on stories told my some of Fish’s closest friends and inspirational talents. Each painting was accompanied with headphones to allow visitors to listen to the audio recordings while viewing Jeremy’s visual interpretation of the story on the wall. Fish gathered Snoop Dogg, Aesop Rock, Mike Giant, Lance Mountain, El-P, Ron English, Ricky Powell, and many others to get some of their most inspiring stories on record.

As not all of Fish’s closest fans made it out to the exhibition, we have collaborated on the “Listen and Learn” app, bringing the interactive experience to your iPad and iPhone and bring new life to Fish’s “story paintings” and most experimental gallery show to date. The app comes bundled with 30 images of Fish’s paintings and 1.5 hours of audio stories that accompanied and inspired each piece. The “Listen and Learn” app also comes with a handful of videos and gallery of images from Fish’s exhibition.

To kick off the launch of the “Listen and Learn” app, Fish has illustrated (in black Sharpie) on the back of a brand new iPad 2, being given away now on Upper Playground’s Facebook page. To enter the contest, simply include your email address in the contest link on the lower left side of the Upper Playground Facebook page. One winner at random will get a Fish customized iPad 2. The contest runs through December 31, 2011.

For those of you on a Mobile Device, use this link.

Herbert Baglione @ Nuart 2011 video

Herbert Baglione Nuart 2011 from NUART on Vimeo.

If you got a chance to see Herbert’s installation room at Nuart, then you know how incredible and moving the piece really was. His signature calligraphic handstyle documented each name of the victims of the Utøya massacre that occurred in Norway earlier this year.

As Nuart writes, “A moving tribute to the victims of the Utøya massacre in Norway earlier this year from Brazil’s finest exponent of street calligraphy. The text are the names of every victim lost in the tragedy.”

Shot and Edited by Saft Film.
