FANTASTIC REALISM BY IRVING NORMAN

Irving Norman‘s art evolved out of American Expressionism and though he understood and admired what his contemporaries were accomplishing, Irving followed the song of a different muse. He said at one time: The path I followed chose me, not me it, I was led to painting by experiencing life, it’s contemplation and a desperate need to give it expression. I find spiritual strength in the artists of the remotest past to the immediate present.”

Although influenced by the Social Realists of his time, Norman’s style of figuration was set apart by a predilection for caricature – a realism inflamed by the fantastic rather than the natural. The horror and futility of war as experienced by the artist in Spain certainly equipped him with an apocalyptic vision. Norman was creating meticulously detailed realistic paintings and making use of “cartoon” aesthetics decades before the advent of Photorealism or the current “low-brow” fad.

TRANSITORY CINEMATIC MOMENTS BY JIM GAYLORD

by Ariadna Zierold

New York City based artist Jim Gaylord‘s abstract works are often based on imagery from contemporary film and television. Combining stills from transitory cinematic moments, he transposes them to extract new compositions, which are then used as the bases for paintings and gouache on paper collages. Gaylord’s work combines meticulous figuration with obscure forms that are familiar but unrecognizable.

Doodles

Doodles explores the realm of the subconsciousness, the language of archetypal dreams and universal symbols. Combining an absence of linear perspective and mixed media compositions, he guides the viewer through a primitive, rhythmic, narrative.

Doodles communicates through the history of symbolic signs, found objects and mysticism. His
intentional and emotive distortions of the figure are reminiscent of indigenous Folk Art found in South America, Mexico and Native cultures. There is a constant rhythm pulsing underneath the body of his work resulting in detailed, repetitive patterns throughout the figuration and landscapes. Doodles also works in a variety of scale ranging from large outdoor murals to small intricate drawings.
