“TO BREAK A PLATE FOR GREECE”, LATEST MURAL BY ESCIF IN TOMMARP, SWEDEN

by Ariadna Zierold

Escif just sent us some fresh images from his latest street work / experiment which just took place on the streets of Tommarp in Sweden.

Titled “To Break A Plate For Greece”, the new mural is as conceptual as ever and makes reference to the traditional Greek folk custom involving the smashing of plates or glasses and that probably (there is no consensus when it comes to this) derives from an ancient practice of ritually “killing” plates on mourning occasions, as a means of dealing with loss.

Historians are not agreeing on where the Greek tradition of breaking plates comes from. The version I like the most says that the ancient greeks broke plates against the marble floors of their houses to ward off evil spirits with the clatter of broken crockery. Breaking a plate for Greece is a psychomagic act to ward off evil spirits from Greece and from all Europe. I hope that it works!…Opa! –Escif

ESCIF REVEALS NEW MURALS AT WESTON-SUPER-MARE, UK

by Ariadna Zierold

The extremely talented Valencian artist, Escif, with his arresting black-and-white-and-minimal vignettes depicting strange and thoughtful scenes, has revealed new pieces at Weston-Super-Mare.

The paintings are deceptively simple yet inspired and often incorporate repetitive elements drawn from his personal symbology, which oddly enough may elicit an equally strong response from the viewer.

“After several discarded proposals, we arrived to the clever idea that there isn’t a bigger theme today than piss (peace) in the world, so let’s think about it. What if the actuals wars arrive to Occident? Let’s search for the toilet please!” – ESCIF

Using his strategy of working with found materials, his new mural shows a pattern of a vintage floral wall paper adorned with portraits of the people who live inside the building.  The vintage wall paper motif, actually based on a real wall paper found inside the building covers the facade of this building in Madrid, Spain.

About WE AArt
Aalborg deserves, being one of the larger Danish cities, an interesting and not least inspiring urban space. The reality of today is that very little contemporary art enriches Aalborg – or the people living in it. Street art – public art – already exists in Denmark, and can be seen in particularly larger cities. WEAArt is, however, the first festival in Denmark to be focusing entirely on murals.

A space created to surprise, marvel and excite – and susceptible to alternative artistic arenas.
