New York based Natalia Arbelaez is a first generation Colombian American, born and raised in Miami, Florida. She received her B.F.A. from Florida International University and her M.F.A. with a concentration in ceramics and sculpture from The Ohio State University, where she received an Enrichment Fellowship.
“My work serves as a bridge to research my history and culture while aiming to preserve. I look to the history of Latin American and the Amerindian people; I work with how these identities are lost through conquest, migration, and time, gained through family, culture, exploration, and passed down through tradition and genetic memory. I use these influences to contribute to a contemporary dialogue while simultaneously continuing the work of my ancestors. There has been so much loss and stigma of these communities that it is important to me that my work celebrates and honors them.” Natalia Arbelaez
Dallas-based artist Dan Lam (previously featured here) has been working on another batch of dripping otherworldly work. “Bait” offers a continued exploration of color, form and the interactions of her imaginative sculptural organisms.Whether seen in the process itself, or the final result, which exudes both an intense beauty and an intense uncomfortability, Lam plays with these polarities and examines them closely. These pieces will be on display at Spoke SF until October 28.
PIRU is a South Korean illustrator and digital artist based out of Seoul. PIRU thinks art is an honest way to express herself. PIRU makes things she thinks and feels. “Regardless if my paintings are beautiful or ugly, I always try to express my candidness.” Check out a selection of her work.
Gary Card is a set designer, illustrator and all-round creative talent. Gary’s Happy Breakfast zine –mid-‘00s new rave scene– is splashed across 22 pages in gungey greens, ink stain blues and near-neon yellows to stage the dripping backdrop to a nightmarish collaged cast of Gary’s signature monsters.
Faig Ahmed’s surreal sculptures incorporate ancient carpet-weaving techniques from his native country of Azerbaijan into forms that anyone would identify has hyper-contemporary. His intricately patterned weavings are mounted on architectural structures, fabricated in wood or plastic. Sometimes the stark contrast between white form and traditional tapestry is startling enough on its own; other times, Ahmed alters the patterns to suggest digital manipulation, pixelation, and distortion.
New York City based Ted Lawson reveals a persistent interest in the human body. His art investigates processes related to the physical body such as growth, its needs, its decay and death. Lawson strips individuality from his subjects while simultaneously forcing character through implications of the viewer, and therefore, complicating the very meaning of identity.
Using figurative representation and geometric abstraction, Ted Lawson creates a narrative progression of forms that reveals something conceptually greater than the sum of their parts. Ted’s large scale works combine digital technology with highly crafted traditional sculpting methods to seamlessly produce conceptual objects that express the underlying analog truth within his subject matter.
Los Angeles based artist Sterling Ruby works in a large variety of media including ceramics, painting, drawing, collage, sculpture and video. Often, his work is presented in large and densely packed installations.
The artist has cited a diverse range of sources and influences including aberrant psychologies (particularly schizophrenia and paranoia), urban gangs and graffiti, hip-hop culture, craft, punk, masculinity, violence, public art, prisons, globalization, American domination and decline, waste and consumption. In opposition to the minimalist artistic tradition and influenced by the ubiquity of urban graffiti, the artist’s works often appear scratched, defaced, camouflaged, dirty, or splattered.
