A HEAVY FORESTED WORLD BY JESSE JACOBI

Detroit based Jesse Jacobi‘s work focuses on an unnamed culture of people living in a mysterious, heavily-forested world. While Jacobi makes it a point to not be explicit about any concrete narrative happenings, there is a clear framework of visual and thematic motifs involved: reverence for nature, the use of masks and various obscuring garb, cycles of life-death-dream, structures in differing stages of ruin, ritual and witchcraft, the space between visible and invisible environments, and the true nature of man.

The smaller works are supplemental – images of idols perhaps used in every day life for various means of protection or intensification – and are intended to be seen as artifacts one might find within the larger world. The time and place depicted in his paintings is not made clear, but the setting is very far removed from modernity and anything involving current times.

CLAY 3D PRINTED WORKS BY MATTHEW ANGELO HARRISON

by Ariadna Zierold

Detroit-based artist Matthew Angelo Harrison investigates analog and digital technologies to explore origins of all kinds. He makes low-resolution 3D printers and uses them to reproduce authentic African artifacts. Harrison plays havoc with the usual hierarchy of objects by literally elevating the new clay 3D printed works above the wood originals. Appearing at once earthy and other-worldly, the new clay sculptures are symbolic of many African-Americans’ relationship to their own African origins.

His artwork is often created by machines that he designs and builds from scratch. Matthew is interested in aspects of manufacturing, specifically its hidden performative aspect. He received a BFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. He has shown his work at MOCAD and the Jewish Museum (NYC), and has a forthcoming solo exhibition at Atlanta Contemporary.

Pat Perry is an artist from Michigan who writes and makes pictures through careful and cautious observation. He often works itinerantly, and lives in Detroit. Pat’s calculated and surreal illustrations bend back the paradigm by once again elevating the work elaborated by a traveler’s hands. His illustrations feels perfectly proportioned, almost as if in motion. Less reliance on symmetry and more focus on flow. There’s an energy about the continuity and vibrance of his images, whether the color scheme is brilliant or tempered, and his ability to satisfy a breadth of clients while still solidifying his fine art itch is admirable.

David Choe Thoughts From the Mangchi Tour Bus

david choe mangchi thoughts from the road

A story about the day ‪#‎Mangchi‬ came to your town – We packed a Metallica sized tour bus with crispy beefy farts and some of the most talented musicians on earth , we did everything we could to keep the ticket prices free or under 10 dollars , we gave every single person who comes to our shows hundreds of dollars worth of free great art and music , the fans in line are handing out free chips, tasty snacks and gifts to other people waiting , new friendships and romances are forming, strangers are coming together to create bonds and new strong communities , loner suicidal outcasts are being accepted by each other ,we abuse ourselves and play our hearts and souls out for you in tiny sweaty basements and clubs. I been alive for 40 years and have been to thousands of shows (many that I wasn’t the right age or sold out and still snuck/blew my way into) , I can safely say you’ll never experience anything like this again , for those who quit jobs, flew out, snuck in, hitchiked, bribed, begged, scratched , clawed and did anything to come to the show we love and appreciate you. Thank you for helping sell out every city on the tour so far, and singing and dancing your asses off ,this is our first time playing the east coast and we definitely feel the love,
we just get leaner and meaner every night- 3 cities left – are you ready ?
