Aaron Johnson has created two distinctive and wildly innovative approaches to painting: his well-known “reverse-painted acrylic polymer-peel” paintings and his sock paintings. The two bodies of work exist in counterpoint; meticulously layered Indian-miniaturesque details in his reverse-paintings starkly juxtapose the swashbuckling brushstrokes created by a clunky impasto of flung socks in his sock paintings.
Uniting his two modes of work is Johnsonʼs inimitable style, a painterly madness flowing forward from his influences of Goya, Peter Saul, Picasso, Ensor, Llyn Foulkes, and the Hairy Who. Johnson’s paintings are a delight of a seductive surface, garish color, and entangled flesh.
“In my paintings, I construct absurdist allegories featuring comic grotesque characters. Technically I believe in an experimental approach to painting that evolves the historical medium into a contemporary adaptation. I have developed two main modes of making paintings: reverse-painted acrylic polymer-peel paintings and sock paintings. The methods involve reverse-painting, meticulously detailed layers, and polymer peel transfer; or the opposite: building up a chunky impasto of old socks. My spectrum of interests ranges from socio-political critique on one end to existential human questions on the other; each individual painting will fall somewhere between those two poles.” Aaron Johnson
Chris Agnew is a British artist known for his highly detailed drawings and icon panel etchings. He received his BA in Contemporary Art Practice from The University of Leeds in 2008, followed by a Masters in Fine Art at the Wimbledon College of Art in 2010.
Agnew’s work deals with the construction and deconstruction of belief systems, be they political, religious, social or cultural. He is interested by the malleable nature of what we hold as ‘truth’, and how the presentation of information informs our subsequent understanding of events.
Seth Armstrong was born and raised in Los Angeles, CA. After studying painting in Northern Holland, he received a BFA from the California College of the Arts in San Francisco. Many years later, he left his home in Oakland and moved back to Los Angeles, where he now lives and works.

José Luis Sánchez Rull studied in the Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, NY. After recieving his title as Bachelor in Fine Arts (BFA), he returned to Mexico with a mind set in creating a body of work in his home-workshop in Tláhuac. Deep in solitude, he developed his craze for taking art to a moment farther from seeing and hushing and understanding image as a three-part existence: creating, seeing and talking.
Sanchez Rull’s drawings and paintings are fed by a broad repertoire of literary, visual, and musical references: from William Blake, Charles Bukowski to the comic strips in MAD Magazine and the cartoon characters Tom and Jerry. The work is an exploration of the artists psyche in terms of a visceral graphic expression.
Tim Molloy is a New Zealand illustrator and comic artist, living and working in Melbourne. Since 2006 he has collaborated with writer Adam Lachlan to produce Life on Earth cartoons. Recently he has published two graphic novels, ‘It Shines and Shakes and Laughs’ and ‘Mr Unpronounceable Adventures’.
A selection of new fantastic work by artist Alex Kuno (previously featured here), using ink, watercolor, graphite and chalk. These new mixed-media pieces offer a decidedly frenzied, more toiled spin. These works take the familiar children and beasts and expose their innards, a blend of seemingly floral and unsettling organic matter. With Kuno’s playful vibrancy, each exposed being is more absorbing than repelling.
UK artist Carl Beazley’s portraits are twisted and multiplied, clearly surreal, yet based on real faces with their pores and blemishes. Completely self-taught, the 26-year old artist credits his unique point of view to being able to find his own voice absent the outside influence of teachers or mentors.
“By not going to University and not studying the all different painting techniques from history, I feel it has given me the freedom of learning from trial and error. I am always trying to look for something new and original that’s never been done before, and although I love the paintings of the old masters, it is important to me to look to the future so that in a hundred years from now we have our own history, not just a regurgitated version of the generation that came before us. If we don’t try to take art to the next level by looking forward, we will just end up going in circles.” Carl Beazley
Japanese artist from Osaka, Fumihiro Kato, has been active since 2004 displaying his numerous works ranging from abstract to landscapes with his own special touch. He creates his art with a style that has a very complex and meticulous technique, filled with intricate lines that are almost creating designs within designs.
His work is described on his website as his “own original painting technique, which has never been used by anyone before.” It goes without saying that his technique is unique, but the use of vibrant colors is evident and mixed so well with the intricacies of his artwork.
