Beverly Fishman’s artistic practice comments on the state of mankind with respect to the ever-increasing amount of and dependence on technology in our daily lives. More specifically, her artwork examines how medical data is rapidly becoming an increasing part of our identity as it has the ability to define and confine us in many ways, such as manic depressive, menopausal, obese, diabetic or hypertensive.

That data is not only used to describe our ills, or lack of wills, but also to prescribe and perpetuate our growing reliance on medications—ethical or otherwise—to make us look, feel and perform better.

DYSTOPIC FUTURE BY MARY IVERSON

Mary Iverson is an exquisite landscape painter with a razor-sharp contemporary edge. On the surface, we see activism, her collages and paintings warning us of a dystopic future existence. Mary’s prints and paintings resonate with data visualizations and information graphics, Modernist painting, and resurgences of photo-realistic and illustrative painting as well.

Iverson’s shipping containers can be seen as metonymic stand-ins for a whole system of distribution for objects that we deal with every day. They are like scientific conceptual “black-boxes” which are put into place to sidestep our actual material understanding. We might see these containers on a dock or train and have only a vague sense of what they may contain or how those materials might be used. This parallels directly with the distribution of data on the net. The analog and digital worlds of things echo each other.

WEATHER DATA TRANSFORMED INTO BASKET WEAVING SCULPTURES

Nathalie Miebach‘s colorful sculptures are modeled from scientific data pulled from wind patterns, often from storms, gales or blizzards. Miebach translates this quantified data into physical forms that mimic the twirling motions of the invisible weather they aim to imitate.

“The method that I use is basket weaving because basket weaving is a very simple three dimensional grid that I can use to translate data with,” said Miebach. “Everything in the sculpture, whether it is a colorful bead, a string, whether it’s a dowel or reed, represents a different data point. Nothing is put on there for purely aesthetic reasons.”

The Boston artist discovered this process while simultaneously taking an astronomy class at Harvard and learning basket weaving as an extracurricular activity. She yearned for a way to physically display the data she was learning about in class, and thus her 3D scientific models were born. In a field where one is not able to see the data they collect, her sculptures give a form to that which was previously only able to be felt, tasted, and smelled.
