OF MICE AND CHILDREN by Gottfried Helnwein at Modernism Gallery SF September 18th – November 1st

We first came to know Austrian artist, Gottfried Helnwein through his amazing large scale installations in Ireland such as this one titled “The Last Child” back in 2008.

‘Of Mice and Children’,  Gottfried Helnwein‘s current solo exhibition opened this month at Modernism Gallery in San Francisco and will remain on view until November 1st.   Making reference to Steinbeck’s ‘Of Mice and Men’, the artist explores Steinbeck’s dark sense of humanity pervading through out his paintings and provocatively examines ‘childhood’ through his intense portraiture of children.

Most recently the subject of a major retrospective at the Albertina Museum in Vienna, Helnwein’s work has been exhibited extensively worldwide, and is featured in the collections of important museums in Europe, Asia and the United States. We take a look at his studio portraits for posted for his current show in SF. More info at helnwein.com

Sure, Muslim German-Turkish, living in Berlin model/actress Sila Sahin looks all wholesome here, but she is getting heat from her Muslim family for posing naked on the cover and inside German Playboy magazine. “I did it because I wanted to be free at last,” she said. “These photographs are a liberation from the restrictions of my childhood.”

As the Daily Mail reports, “Ms Sahin’s declared intention was to used the controversial Playboy photoshoot as a call to action for other Turkish girls who suffer the effects of their strict backgrounds, where women’s choices are often limited, husbands are chosen for the girls and chastity closely controlled.”

The NES Guitar

Posted from The Citrus Report

Hey, if you can dream up your childhood in a practical or completely impractical way, we say go for it. This is what we know of the NES Guitar:

Custom 6 String Electric Guitar with an NES body. Features a standard neck with a hard-tail bridge. Single coil pickup with volume control and an output jack. (Note: Each guitar will be slightly different with constant improvements to the design).

Oh, and of course, because this is Geekologie, there is a video. The guitar has a nice little fuzz to it, sort of a nice banjo/vintage sound to it.

Baseball players that still live with their parents—kind of fresh and forward-thinking if you ask us

Posted from The Citrus Report

We have thought about moving back in with our parents, so if you are a Major League Baseball player, why not live in your childhood room and have your mom do your laundry and make you meals? Especially when you are 23-years old?

Tyson Ross, who plays for our beloved Oakland A’s, still lives in Oakland with mom and dad. He makes $400,000 a year, and doesn’t pay rent. According to this Wall Street Journal article, “League officials say many players head home over the winter, but they believe that only Mr. Ross and Neil Walker, of the Pittsburgh Pirates, return to the nest during the season.”

We like this guy. And he has a girlfriend. Not bad, Mr Ross.
