Akira Yamaguchi paints large and complex canvases using a technique which recalls ancient Japanese yamato-e paintings. This traditional style is updated and mixed with manga-like scenes and employed for mostly contemporary subjects.

The artist’s favorite themes are hyper-detailed cityscapes featuring buildings and infrastructures which are sometimes cross-sectioned in order to show what’s happening in the interiors. Traditional and contemporary buildings are filled with people dressed as in different epochs, cohabiting in a chaotic and stratified world.

LAYERED NARRATIVES BY LARS ELLING

by Ariadna Zierold

Lars Elling‘s paintings are layered narratives told in a fragmented visual language that incorporate allusions to film and photography, sometimes also invoking nostalgia with references to private photo albums.

In Elling’s large canvases, human bodies rarely take entirely conventional forms. Rather, their faces and limbs melt into nonfigurative elements–atmosphere, blurred color, scrubbed-out regions of neutral tint–gesturing toward a broader horizon, nodding at persona and narrative while ultimately frustrating any drive toward coherence or story.

THE DEPTHS OF FIGURATION BY DANNY FOX

by Ariadna Zierold

Danny Fox was born in 1986 in St Ives, Cornwall, and currently lives and works between Los Angeles and London. Fox’s characters are often directly influenced by the homeless community of Skid Row. Despite all odds, these characters radiate a sense of unquantifiable style and swagger that Fox’s aims to highlight in his paintings.

His paintings take on the form of pictographs, coming to life through a didactic composite of symbols and characters, both on horseback and gloved. Similar to the histories of his characters and the genesis of their influences, Fox’s physical canvases are very much allegories in themselves.

From June 6th to 12th, JUSTKIDS, in association with StreetArtNews, was invited by Urban Nation Berlin to take over their notorious signature event Project M. Bringing summer flavors to Berlin they selected six internationally acclaimed artists, including 1010, Askew, Bicicleta Sem Freio, Borondo, Eron and Fafi to create murals around the German capital for Project M/9 “Colors”. The painting week was finalized with a group exhibition showcasing the works of eleven artists including Tristan Eaton, Felipe Pantone, Okuda San Miguel, Crystal Wagner, Maser, Jan Kaláb, and the six muralists.

Whether in large-scale murals in urban environments around the world, or on smaller scale pieces on paper and canvas, the featured artists—hailing from around the globe—converge to investigate the specific way a high-octane color palette can produce an intense visual experience. In some of the works—shown for the first time in Berlin—this emerges from the interactions between colours and their tensions and contrasts; while other works inquire into the expressive qualities of colours in the context of visual culture today.

John Kviar discovered graffiti during his youth in Paris area, near Melun, where he grew up. After a few years of drawing, it was in 2002 that he began to do graffiti on walls.

In 2009 he created a couple of friends the artistic collective Thérapicturale. He started to create the characters in human form, but without body. In recent years, Kviar sets his stories in pictures on canvases with oil painting. By freeing himself of any distinctive character to humans, he imposes -through his characters- true identity both unique and amazing.

The Sound of Silence | ANGELA DALINGER

“Swimmin’ in The Playground” is a new Group Exhibit at FIFTY24SF GALLERY, next to our flagship UPPER PLAYGROUND store curated by SFSWIM. The show is currently displaying work from artist, Angela Dalinger.

A quick glance at Angela Dalinger’s work committed me to hours of independent study that offered more than just dystopian images that made my dark side grin, but a crash course of investigation into her soul. A resiliency; a depth of mystery that felt like the real sense of “cool”- exploded from the imagery and interviews I read. Unexploited, raw and genuine.

It was so refreshing to feel the images of her Art Brut style paintings encapsulate a deeper knowing of suffering on an individual, societal and even fictional level.

This is my perception of the dark, witty drawings and paintings rendered by German born illustrator, Angela Dalinger. At 32 years of age, Dalinger knows what she wants and it’s not the big city, bars and heavy metal shows. It is the peace and silence of a small village outside Hamburg, with 100 occupants, that offers sounds of nature and silence, allowing her creativity to flow.

Dalinger’s Comic book, “The Werewurf,” explicitly showcases the delectable irreverent wit and and re-contextualization of a man/werewolf that is actually a Weremole musician shape shifting into a mole at the dawn of a full moon heavy metal show.

Getting absorbed into the snapshots of life and tragedy in Dalinger’s work took me into a reverberating silence. The kind of silence where everything is visible and invisible at the same time. The sound of silence that makes no apologies when it greets darkness, an old friend, coming to talk to me again. (Thanks, Simon & Garfunkel).

THE PHOTOREALISTIC PAINTINGS OF ZHANG SHUJIAN

by Ariadna Zierold

zhang shujian, portrait, canvas, photorealistic, painting, upper playground

Zhang Shujian is a young Chinese painter who intensively examines the human face in his artistic practice. Shujian was born in Hunan Province in 1987 and graduated in the Department of Oil Painting of Central Academy of Fine Arts in 2010. Surprisingly enough, he chose to study in the No.4 Studio, which is known for explorative expressionism. But in the end, he choose the method of Photographic Realism.

Shujian refuses to conform to the established standard of aesthetics. He rather paints all details of the face in his photorealistic portraits. In Shujian’s portraits could be seen all those thing that people tend to overlook or ignore. He points out the beauty in a toothless grin or the heavy, wrinkled eyelids of an elder man. In fine brushstrokes artist paints single hairs on his panels and adds every single freckle, pimple or blemish. Typical in his paintings and drawings is the meticulousness Shujian uses to depict skin. In pencil on paper or with thin layers of oil paint, varnish and lacquer, he creates pieces that capture more than the image of a person.

ARTIST DUO “STALLMAN” CREATE VIBRANTLY HUED CANVASES

by Ariadna Zierold

The most recent offerings Jason Hallman and Stephan Stum “Stallman“prove that innovation and progression reign supreme in the latest canvas on edge wall sculptures. The two artists do not hesitate to elaborate on past successes while introducing captivating new line work and bold color pairings.

Meticulously folding canvas and layering color, the art duo Stallman turn a traditional painting surface on its head, using the structure of the canvas to give their works vibrant depth. They are deeply inspired by gradients found in the natural world, their color selection and positioning appearing almost topographic.

The Pacific Northwest based pair calls this body of work “Canvas on Edge,” giving canvas the leading roll within each each piece. By positioning the medium outward its curved shapes become all about depth and form and serve as large, elevated line drawings.

“We create together, one acting as the right side of the brain and the other the left. This union of dynamic minds dissolves the boundaries of what is possible turning the ordinary into extraordinary.”
