Henn Kim is an illustrator from Seoul, Korea. Her minimal and surreal illustrations are heavily evocative; they  suggest deep feelings and emotions through visual connections and unexpected juxtapositions. It’s a free flow of visions and sensations depicted through essential, black and white figures who act in a world of giant objects, metaphoric illustrations of emotions or windows opened on our subconscious.

UNFINISHED BUSINESS BY VEINS

by Ariadna Zierold

christian vine, veins, illustration, monochromatic, black and white, surreal, upper playground

Melbourne-based artist Christian Vine aka VEINS’ artwork possesses strong characteristics of solid black work, which is surrounded by a mix of white space and contoured outlines. There is a sense of unfinished business that emanates through his work, although others might see it as a space for improvement or a space that is yet to be developed to its full potential. What may look like a regular picture at first glance has layers upon layers of stories hidden within.

Unreleased Photos from New Documentary “Blue Velvet Revisted” by Peter Braatz

Blue Velvet is celebrating its 30th birthday this year coinciding with Peter Braatz’s release of Blue Velvet Revisited – never before seen photos and footage depicting the making-of. Director, Filmmaker and Transcendental Meditator, David Lynch asked German-born Braatz to come out to North Carolina to “observe him direct.” Braatz shot 70 reels of Super 8 film and took nearly 1000 photos. The behind the scenes look encapsulates the world of Blue Velvet and David Lynch like a fly on the psychedelic wall of the 1985 set. Photos of Dennis Hopper, Isabella Rossellini, Laura Dern, Kyle MacLachlan and of course, Mr. Lynch himself.

“David was producing every piece of art,” Braatz says. “He’s writing, he’s creating props, he’s making set decoration. You see him in my film working on each piece himself. So it’s not just a portrait of Blue Velvet, but a portrait of David in 1985 as an artist.”

“Beneath that appearance there are so many things happening,” says Lynch in Blue Velvet Revisited, and this making-of piece will take its viewers there. The documentary is being released along with a soundtrack just out from Crammed Discs.

“Sound is so important to him [Lynch], he adds so many things in postproduction,” Braatz says. “Ants crawling under a glass or—how do you call it in English?—a match that goes on fire. These things are mostly related very closely to the sound of the picture.” Angelo Badalamenti composed the original movie’s soundtrack and went on to create many more musical masterpieces with Lynch on projects such as Lost Highway, Mulholland Drive, and Twin Peaks.

Now Braatz has made an homage to Blue Velvet, sensual, provocative and true to the eccentric, dreamy vibrations of what is now a voyeur classic. A “meditation,” he calls it.

Braatz hopes the documentary will have a film festival premiere this year.

AMAZING ETCHINGS BY THOMAS AMERLYNCK

Check out these gorgeous etchings by Brussels, Belgium-based artist Thomas Amerlynck.

“The aura of engraving has always attracted me even beyond its exercise. Engraving has acquired a sacred format due to its development coinciding with printing and its worldwide best-sellers ( the bible, the dictionnary, scientifical or historical publications). On the other hand, television, a more popular and modern image broadcasting medium is at the opposite of the latter. Hence the idea of confronting these two practices in order to bring about hybrid images where the social and artistic codes are interwoven.”

FINGERPRINT DRAWINGS BY NICOLAS JOLLY

by Ariadna Zierold

nicolas jolly, fingerprint, drawing, black and white, france, upper playground

Nicolas Jolly is a French artist working with black ink. Black and white allows him to bring additional emotion to the scene by increasing the set of chiaroscuro. There is a large concern in the compositions of his drawings. The technique he uses,”fingerprint”, allows him to guide the eye of the observer through the various elements of the scene compositions. All convolutions bring dynamism and speed, amplifying the intense and dramatic effect. The subject is anime, dance and grows. It can accentuate a detail in the design and target emotion to convey.

THE ORDINARINESS IN PATTERNS BY PAVEL HAYEK

by Ariadna Zierold

In his paintings, graphic art, and photogrames Pavel Hayek focuses upon visual material at his direct disposal, which also reflects his approach to living nature and to things within his current reach and contact.

He does not want to attract attention to the exclusiveness of his models; quite the other way round: he focuses upon their ordinariness, their everyday character. Just the patterns the shapes of which we may not realize during the “normal”, the utilitarian contact, appear to be essential for him.

Beyond any doubt, the most important feature of these Hayek’s works is obviously his understanding of the whole picture area as a certain stucture sui generis.
