Santa Rosa, CA based Justin Margitich works with watercolor, colored pencil, and acrylic on paper. Margitich draws from anthropology, taxonomy, geology, and alchemy creating abstract paintings that offer special depth and opposing textures that force the viewer to be engaged.
In each work, brightly hued, organically flowing gradients are arranged in seemingly impossible configurations. Upon close observation, the inorganic plastic qualities of the artists’ materials become apparent to the viewer. Throughout the exhibition, these fluctuations between organic and inorganic are subtle reminders of where we find meaning in the order of our contemporary culture.
Street artist Stephan Doitschinoff aka Calma is an itinerant painter and muralist in Brazil. In his work, Doitschinoff expresses his interest in Afro-Brazilian folklore and religious traditions, primarily the blending of Christian and African ritual practices. He fills his delicate paintings with alchemic and pagan symbolism, Latin text, and pichação, the graffiti writing unique to São Paulo.
Milan based artist El Gato Chimney started his career as a self-taught artist, developing an early interest in graffiti that led to a successful journey into street art. El Gato Chimney has become a prominent presence in leading publications on the subject.
As the years went by, thanks to the acquisition of new knowledge and the need to continuously improve his technical skills, the artist began to prefer to work in his studio, dedicating his time to introspective research in depicting immaterial things, such as emotions and inner visions.
Currently, El Gato Chimney’s studies range over a wide variety of subjects, such as alchemy, ancient and modern art, magic, mirabilia, occultism, popular folklore, primitive art and spiritualism.
San Francisco based illustrator Nicomi Nix Turner is recognized for her intricately detailed botanical-scapes, esoteric symbolism, provocative renderings. She conjures up intricate images which explore biological phenomena and subjects revolving around the arcane.
Combining her love of nature with a deep fascination for ancient practices belonging to belief systems such as alchemy and religion, Turner constructs narratives within her work which allude to themes of regrowth, biological deconstructionism and the power of belief.
Her works are created using graphite on paper in a way that has been described as a rare talent for manipulating and “painting” with the basic medium.
